how to not use up cellular data on iPhone 4s

My cellular data is almost used up for the month and I don't know why because I have been Using the wifi from in my home

iPhone 4S, iOS 5.1.1

When the phone sleeps and wifi is then turned off (automatically), the cell data channel is used to communicate.

To avoid this, Settings>turn on airplane mode, then in wifi, turn on wifi.

I believe WiFi will stay on if the iPhone is plugged in. So, that's another option.

I don't think the carrier can do anything about this specific issue.
