I think you mean you want to delete an account rather than a mailbox.
Mail preferences > accounts, select the account on the left side of the window and click on the '-' icon in the bottom left corner.
Long story... I tried to create a second @me.com mail box so that I would have my everyday mailbox and one that I would use for a non-profit that I work with.
I thought I had set the new one up correctly SJNHA@me.com
What ever I did or did not do setting this up it just wouldn't operate. It all having to do with the incoming and outgoing mail server.
I decided just to scrap the whole idea and delete the half set up mailbox. I can't even seem to do that.
Here's what just worked for me (in OS X 10.9.2 and Mail v 7.2).
You led me to the valley, but the path differed; Right click and then choose
Here is what worked for me: Right click and then choose "Remove from VIPs'" in OS X 10.9.2 and Mail v 7.2. VIP Mail box gone.
CTRL-click on the mailbox and choose delete from the contextual menu that appears.
I get lots of choices..
New Mailbox
Export Mailbox
even
Edit and take 'Online"
But no delete
Exactly which mailbox is it that you are trying to delete.
