Mountain Lion parental controls don't allow YouTube

Parental Controls worked fine on Lion. Now, no matter how I configure ML, when my son navigates to YouTube a blank page is loaded. If I turn Parental Controls off, he can load the page fine.

Doesn't it just.

In case Apple hadn't noticed, OS X is primarily in use by Home Users. It's (generally) a great family OS. This absolutely *****, a MAJOR Home User feature that they promote heavily, and they can't be bothered making it work. They've known about the issue since the end of July and yet omit a fix from the first patch update.

Seemingly in 10.8.2 they are more interested in adding Facebook integration, if all media accounts are to be believed. Let's add more features and forget about making the existing ones work 😕

Incidentally, the specific youtube problem may have a semi-workaround. Instead of going to http://www.youtube.com, go to https://www.youtube.com and the page loads. I don't know if it works well enough yet to upload videos, but at least the main site displays.

What else is broken by this bug? How many other sites won't work? Who knows... if anyone has any tips on diagnosing what's going wrong, please let me know and I'll look into it further, there's no Console messages and the html for the page at youtube.com, according to Safari, is empty.

Yep, however, that is ok for browsing, unfortunately it's no good for uploading clips. My daughter is a regular uploader and is unable to upload unless Time Limits are turned off. For some reason, accessing over https causes the uploader to hang indefinitely mid-upload.

All in all, very disappointed. However, on the bright side, 10.8.2 is about to land. If its still not fixed then I will have to roll back. Just very unhappy that I can't find a way to debug this problem. It may be that the fix is straightforwards but without any tools to diagnose, we are at Apple's mercy.

YESSS!

10.8.2 fixes the YouTube issue! Now it can be accessed when time limits are turned on. However, I then found I kept getting warnings about https sites - even Allowing the site would result in repeated warnings. I found another post about this that stated that the errors (when web restrictions are turned off) are due to trying to write a log of the websites visited. To get around this, simply disable the logging for the desired user:

/usr/bin/sudo /usr/bin/dscl . -mcxset /users/username com.apple.familycontrols.logging web always -bool false

- if you're allowing unrestricted web access then there's not much point in logging it I guess 🙂

Anyway, works for me 🙂 Happy again 🙂
