Retina MacBook Pro wont wake from sleep

This issue is frustrating me to the point where I want to return it. About 1 in every 2 times when I try to wake this computer from sleep it will NOT respond to any mouse or keyboard action. The computer is still on (caps lock light works), but the screen just wont turn on. The only solution is to force shut off via power button and restart.


I turned off the "But hard drive to sleep" option in case its an issue with that and the SSD in this computer, but still have the issue. The macbook pro is connected to a cinema display most of the time and it occures more frequently when I connect/disconnect the cinema display. I also have screensaver/log back in after sleep enabled and im pretty sure this only happens when the "enter password to wake from sleep" is enabled so its obviously some sort of OS issue.


(ps I just installed snow lepard and the issue is still happening).

I'm having the same exact issues as you've described. When I got my Retina MacBook Pro I did a Time Machine backup of my Mid-2010 MacBook Pro which was running Lion and restored that to my new Retina machine. I was having these issues. The day Mountain Lion came out I upgraded hoping that would solve it, still having issues. I was hoping the firmware update would fix it, still having the problem. So I did as you did and erased the disk, partioned it, and did a fresh install of Mountain Lion and I'm still having the issue.


Your last update was on the July 31st, has it froze since?


I'm curious, all of us that are having this issue, in System Preferences under Energy Saver, do you have Automatic graphics switching checked or unchecked? Mine has always been checked. I'm unchecking it now and going to force my system to use the better graphics card and see how things go.

I still don't any wakening problem after formatting + freshly installing ML.


I have automatic switching enabled.


What exactly is your problem? Which applications have you installed ?


I would suggest you try to format & install ML and don't install any programs and then check for a few days if you have problems. It might have something to do with applications.

My issue is that when I close the lid or the system goes into power safe sleep mode and I go to open the lid or wake it up and I get nothing, I'm forced to hold the power button and kill it. Sometimes it will give me a black screen with the cursor, I can move the cursor but I never get the login screen or anything.


Yesterday I unchecked automatic switching for the video and left the machine on over night with the lid closed and so far it's working, no freezes or reasons to kill it. So I'm curious how this goes...

and all this was installed on top of a fresh Mountain Lion installation. All versions are the most current and ML compatible.

OK, first of all, open a new bug at bugreport.apple.com. Update it regularly - eventually someone in the QA team will send you an email - so keep them updated on the current bug situation.


What is power safe sleep? Do you mean Enable Power Nap in Energy Saver? It was disabled on mine battery & Power Adapter.


Please keep us updated on your research - once you send a message here I get an email and immediately get here.

After I upgrade to ML from Lion my MacBook Pro Retina always doesn't wake up from sleep and I always need to power cycle in order to use the laptop. This have only happened to me after the SMC upgrade to enable the power nap function. My first initial thought was that the newly added power nap feature might be the problem. After i turned off the power nap feature same problem still occurs every single time when my computer went to a long sleep.


However, the issue was solved after I did a fresh install of ML. I created a ML boot disk and reformat the whole laptop and so far everytime it wakes up like a charm.


Hope my findings will solve the issue for some of you.

Me too. When waking my retina MBP after a long sleep, I can usually type about three characters of my password before it beach-balls. I've left it like that for as long as 30 minutes, but I always have to reset the computer.


I read above that some people have fixed this by re-installing the OS. I don't want to do this just yet.


Could the problem be with some third-party software we all have running? (software that is missing after the re-install?) My background apps: 1password, Alfred, BetterTouchTool, Backblaze, Dropbox, and Transmit. Notice I have a lot of apps that are talking to the network. Maybe one of these doesn't handle the sleep/wake cycle correctly. I see that at least one person above is also using Dropbox.


Maybe related, maybe not: a few times the computer has come out of sleep and looks ok, but then I'll notice the menu bar is frozen, and stuff that talks to the filesystem (like the Finder) becomes frozen and beachballed. I solve this with a reset too.

My issue was solved by re-installing ML. It has been couple days since I re-install the OS and everytime my MBP Retina wakes up in an instant after a long sleep. Although network related software might be a possibility causing your problems but I think is not likely since I have dropbox, Trasnmit, and other network related softwares installed prior and after I re-install the OS. I understand it is a pain in the *** having to re-install everything, but I think is the most feasible/ultimate route of fixing this issue.

Hi,


Sorry I cannot be specific because my memory is not that good, I called AppleCare right after I noticed this happening 7 months ago when I got my late 2011 MB with ML -I had the exact same issue. Close clamshell no matter the circumstances and black screen when I reopened it. They were able to fix it permanently and going on 7 months or so now.


I will give as much information as I can remember so perhaps someone more versed with the OS can weigh in. After a couple days working with them (yes we tried nearly everything) they found some corrupt files related to the screensaver. I am hesitant to say which ones because I do not want anyone screwing up their system but there were two of them, and I want to say they were .plist files and had the word screensaver in them, and they were together. Not completely 100% on that but pretty sure. In my case we moved them from directory to the desktop, ML recreated them when I rebooted, and the problem was solved and I deleted the bad files.


A workaround we found while working through this (it took a couple days) was to tell it to go to sleep before closing the lid. That worked very well until we got it to work by just closing the clamshell.


Strange but true, sorry for the ambiguity but I went through a lot and they do have a solution at Applecare for this - but even he was trying different ideas from the engineers, so perhaps it is not known to all the support people. They were ready to have me ship it in for service right before they tried one last option.


Best of luck - would recommend calling Applecare but if that is not an option hopefully someone will recognize what files I am trying to remember and can add to this.

I also had waking problems, when i closed the lid and tried to wake it.


Took it to apple store and they checked it out. Said all seemed fine, but they decided to use Disk Utilities to repair "permissions".


It worked. No more failing to wake from sleep.


I repair permissions about once a month and it seems to do the trick.

Well after trying all the suggested solutions that did not involve reinstalling ML on my new rMBP I kept experiencing the issues so I decided to call apple support. The support person made me go through some useless steps to resolve the issue, which she seemed to understand. Two hours after talking to them I had the issue once again–power cord on, mac went to sleep and stopped responding when woken up.


I then decided to use ML recovery to clean format the HD, reinstall ML and install each application from scratch. I have not experienced the issue so far in 24 hours. I know reinstalling an OS is not small task, especially if you use the device for work, but in this case I am glad I did.

Yes sometimes that is the only option. Even with the "Most Advanced Operating System in the World", Yeah Right.

But even then iot may not work as sometimes there is a hardware fault that causes these problems. Yes even on Apple Mac Computer.

Well after finishing building my machine I left it plugged in overnight and closed the lid. This morning I tried to wake it up and had the problem again. Ugh! I guess I will sit this one out until an update comes as we are all getting the problem from different models so I am guessing it is OS related. Some nasty bug that will most likely be fixed in the next updates. I will be working around this by not letting the machine charge whil in sleep mode.

Bad luck.

Today my MBP Retina didn't wake up from sleep two times. It also seems like it's running hot when it does that, because the fans ran at full speed.
