Q: Retina MacBook Pro wont wake from sleep

This issue is frustrating me to the point where I want to return it. About 1 in every 2 times when I try to wake this computer from sleep it will NOT respond to any mouse or keyboard action. The computer is still on (caps lock light works), but the screen just wont turn on. The only solution is to force shut off via power button and restart.

I turned off the "But hard drive to sleep" option in case its an issue with that and the SSD in this computer, but still have the issue. The macbook pro is connected to a cinema display most of the time and it occures more frequently when I connect/disconnect the cinema display. I also have screensaver/log back in after sleep enabled and im pretty sure this only happens when the "enter password to wake from sleep" is enabled so its obviously some sort of OS issue.

(ps I just installed snow lepard and the issue is still happening).

    Try this:

When you put your Mac to sleep, wait for the external monitor to show "no signal" or go black. Then switch the monitor off.

Then, before you wake up your Mac, switch the monitor back on, then wake up your Mac. This is clearly some sort of Apple Thunderbolt/DisplayPort problem.

There are at least 20 threads in here with similar Thunderbolt/DisplayPort problems.

SOLUTION!!! I had this problem for months and several talks with AppleCare people, at my expense and here's the solution!!  Upgrade to Mavericks!!  I'm now almost a week without the problem. I'm now going to call AppleCare and tell them!!  If they don't already know! :-)  Please pass this along!

I pinnpointed my issue (RMBP 15" late 2013 + Mavericks) to external display. I have two connected: Apple Thunderbolt Display 27" (+ FW GoFlex 2TB) and Dell U2713H (via Mini Display Port). I also have USB 3 drive connected. After trying out different configuration of connected devices and enabled interfaces (WiFi, BT etc) it appears that for me the cause is the Dell display. It's strange though as the same configuration hadn't caused any problems with RMBP 15" 2012.

In my pmset logs I can see a lot of `Sleep Dark Wake Thermal Emergency: Using AC (Charge:100%)` messages when the display is connected.

Sorry, upgrading to Mavericks isn't a solution.  I have a brand new 2013 rMBP that I painfully installed every app individually rather than pulling over the data from my old macihne (with all the legacy OS crap) and I have the same black-screen-no-wake-up-after-disconnecting-my-thunderbolt-display issue I had with my previous 2012 rMBP running ML.

Crap, double crap.  I actually bought a new machine hoping to get rid of this problem even though my old one was less than a year old.

My new 15 inch 2013 rMBP (purchased last month) doesn't always wake from sleep either.  It seems to happen after I've put the computer to sleep while connected to my Apple 27 inch monitor.  I never noticed this happening with my 2011 MBP. From now on, I will disconnect the MBP from the monitor before putting it to sleep.  Does anyone else have any other solutions?  Thanks

Funny, I was thinking of doing the opposite, putting it to sleep first before disconnecting the monitor.  Simply disconnecting the cables is what I have been doing and it often fails to wake.

Well I did run the commands suggested here way back when we discovered the fix and the fix still works after upgrading to Mavericks. Read back to the earlier posts and you will find them.

I spent a couple hours with support and they ended up resetting something and upgrading the firmware on my 13 inch rMBP, havn't had the problem since and that was months ago.

So you don't have to fish back for the first commands i am referring to (this might be useful for new people finding this thread):

    Potential success--finally--but guardedly optimistic.

I've been dealing with this wake-from-sleep problem for some time--the long delay after opening up my "sleeping" 15-inch "Retina" MacBook Pro, along with a black screen for almost 10-seconds, before my log-in dialog screen finally appeared.

Up to now none of the "tinkering" seemed to have helped, and per a conversation I had with a senior AppleCare tech, my understanding was that the problem was only going to be corrected at the factory level where an adjusted chipset could be implemented into the build/assembly phase.

In another thread there has been a lot of "voodoo" running Terminal commands, which also had not brought success.

Out of morbid curiosity or plain blind optimism, I decided to research an official Apple developer page offered up by another contributor on the other thread that explained the various Terminal commands as far as power management. I came up with a last-ditch effort and assembled several Terminal commands.

These were the Terminal commands I ran and in this order:

    sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 3

    sudo pmset -a autopoweroff 0

    sudo pmset -a autopoweroffdelay 36000

    sudo pmset -a standby 0

    sudo pmset -a standbydelay 36000

    sudo pmset -a acwake 0

Then I closed the lid to my MBPr around midnight last night and un-plugged it. Around 6AM this morning (5-plus hours later), I woke up, opened the MBPr and it instantly went right to my user-password log-in dialog--no delay or dark screen.

I'll be curious now to see if others, likewise vexed for so long with this issue, have similar success, and am further hopeful that the settings "stick" beyond any expected OS or other future updates.

I will update my own experience in a couple days, success or failure—hopefully success.

    Good luck.

Note: The 36000 in the Terminal commands represents 10-hours in seconds. For me that will work as I am never not on my MBPr more than 5-8 hours at any one time, and if so, I don't mind hibernation mode setting in to save battery power.

Thanks, I was hesitant to enter the commands in Terminal until this am when I, again, was greeted with the black screen on my new 15 inch rmbp, so I have now tried the commands.  I realize that shutting down and then holding down the shift-control-option-power buttons, everything will once again default back to the original settings if this doesn't work.  My fingers are crossed!

Follow-up:  I entered the terminal commands and did not experience any issues with my computer not waking from sleep for about 10 days...until today.  I was ready to declare success, but my rmbp would not wake from sleep after sleeping all night.  I had to press the power button quite a few times, holding it down for a few seconds the last time, before it would wake. I'm just glad that I got Apple Care.

Been having the same issues as everyone else.  Could not agree with you more.  Apple has been useless with regards to addressing this issue which is by no means new.  I have been a loyal Mac person for almost 20 years, but the way things are going here lately, I think I need to rethink my loyalties.

well, wish I could offer a solution, but all I can do is add my voice to this already really long post.  I just bought a brand new mbp 13in late 2013 with retina display (it came with mavericks) laptop several months ago and had no problems.  Just today it decided it needed to get on board with the rest of the mbp's and start refusing to wake from sleep.

Mine seems to be fine when on battery power, but when it goes to sleep when the power is plugged in it will not wake up.

I have two other mac's all older 2009 and 2011 which don't seem to suffer from this.  One of those is on Mavericks.
