Can't change Finder icon

Hi everyone,

I am trying to change my finder icon after installing Mountain Lion but am having problems doing so.

I have tried using applications such as Candybar and LiteIcon but neither of them work and the default finder icon just won't change, even after a restart.

Is anyone else having this problem? Does anyone have a fix I could try? Thanks for your help.

Oh no, I'm sorry it didn't work for you! 😟

It took me three attempts, but yes it was the only image I replaced. What I did was made a copy of the original finder.png first so that I had a backup. Then I replaced the original finder.png with my new finder image. I followed this post found here: http://macthemes.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=858576#p858576

This is all I did so hopefully it'll work for you somehow. Good luck! 🙂

You can restore-change your Finder icon...Just go to your HDD/system/library/CoreServices, right click to "CoreTypes.bundle" and choose "Show package contents, click at /contents/resources and delete "Findericon.icns". Copy-paste icon you want to use (must be 128x128) if its png file rename it to .icns...

Than go to /System/Library/CoreServices/Dock.app, right mouse-choose show package contents and go to /Contents/Resources, there are 2 png files, finder.png and finder@2x.png. Replace them with with same png you used to replace Finder.icns but this time they must be .png- finder.png and finder@2x.png. Restart your machine and voila, your finder icon is back...Reminder, icns and png must be the same file, 128x128.

Here's how I changed the Finder icon in the Dock:

- Replace /System/Library/CoreServices/Dock.app/Contents/Resources/finder128.png with a different 128x128 image.

- Clear icon cache:

sudo find /private/var/folders/ -name com.apple.dock.iconcache -exec rm {} \;

- Restart Finder and Dock

Now I have a "pile of poo" icon in my Dock, which I think is more appropriate for Finder.
