Airplay: How do I know if it should work on my Mac?

I have a 2011 Mac..first ones that came out..it has a Thunderbolt Port.

So, should Airplay with ATV2 work?

I see the icon, but does not find a device..if it's not supposed to work, why even display the icon on the menu bar?

Thanks,

Frank
