Q: OS X Mountain Lion AirPlay Mirroring

AirPlay Mirroring is advertised to work on ANY early 2011 or later MacBook Pro. I bought my MacBook Pro on 2-22-2011 yet I am unable to get AirPlay Mirroring working. I made sure that my MacBook Pro SHOULD be able to use AirPlay Mirroring BEFORE I bought Mountain Lion, and to be honest, I feel I was ripped off, because, as far as I can tell my MacBook Pro is perfectly capable of using AirPlay Mirroring however I am not able to.

AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer).

You might consider a third-party solution called AirParrot.

Although you purchased your MacBook Pro in February 22, 2011, it was not the early 2011 model. That was released two days later, on February 24, 2011.

Ahh, so the fact that I bought it 2 days earlier means I'm screwed out of one of the only Mountain Lion features I cared about? Thanks alot Apple!

The system requirements have nothing to do with when you bought it, they have to do with what model you have. Unfortunately, you have the 2010 model. But AirParrot will do most of what you want.

I think its more of that we expected a better product to the extent that if I'm able to update to the latest software then I should be able to use all of its features. I like to work within the OS and not third party apps; look at earlier versions of windows, I'm not bashing you, but I'm at the same frustration point with other Mac operators.

I have to agree. Of all the features in Mountain Lion I wanted:

    • Airplay mirroring - my Macbook Pro is too old
    • Power nap - my Macbook pro is too old
    • Facebook integration - it's not there
    • iCloud integration - Only seems to work on Apple apps so as I use MS Office I can't have it.

Basically I can't find anything new in 10.8 that makes it even worth the £13.99 I paid.

Atleast with Windows everythign is available to everyone even if it is a crappy expreience on low spec computers. To switch features off unless you've spent over £1000 with apple in the last 18 months is all about selling hardwarte and nothing about providing a decent user expereince.

Apple didn't just 'switch off' the new features of ML for older computers.

Older computers do not have the HARDWARE for those new features.

PowerNap requires built-in flash-based memory (not just any SSD will do) and AirPlay Mirroring requires a CPU with QuickSync-capable integrated graphics.

"Older computers do not have the HARDWARE for those new features." what exactly is this hardware....surely with all the intelligence in Apple they can build Airplay to work with the 2+ year old hardware they reaked in billions of $'s for......

I think what most people are dissappointed about is the fact their $2000 investment can't do what a $300 dollar investment can...

and I think pointing people to third party apps is simply not the answer people want here...it's pushing the issue aside, just look on the app store at all the 1 star reviews and how helpful these reviews have been to so many, I want my $2000 MPB (with 2 graphics cards) to be able to airplay just like my **** phone.....

This is a clear push to no longer support 2 year old hardware and force more upgrades....sure in non Apple world 2 year recycling of HW is normal, but not Apple hardware...things have changed recently, maybe it's greed, but the BS on some forums saying Airplay on older MBP's loaded with RAM and top end CPU will cause the notebook to crawl.....but yet a simple iphone can airplay...come on lads step up and get us working on Airplay..

While it's not all going Pete Tong, it's certainly going Microsoft..

In the case of AirPlay Mirroring, it is the QuickSync Video features of the latest generation of Intel processors.

    http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/architecture-and-technology/quick-sync-vi deo/quick-sync-video-general.html

As for PowerNap, it requires ultra-low power flash memory and a processor that can operate while the computer is otherwise in sleepmode.  Conventional HDD's and even most SSD's still require the system to fully power up to provide full power to operate the disk storage.  The Flash Memory in newer Airs and rMBPs operates at minimal power levels.

Completely Agree with you, the "hardware issue" is a load of crap. Apple used to be a product people aspired to, now its just crap. I've used apple for 20 years, and i brought my first Windows computer yesterday, its cost 1/4 of the price of a mac, and i get to upgrade to windows 8 for free when its released and you'll be dam-n sure that you'll be able to use all of its new features and not get fobbed off with pathetic excuses.

I know people used to think of macs as an investment, but save yourself a bucket of cash, buy a cheapish windows laptop and just replace it every two years, that way youll keep bang up to date with software/hardware and you'll still be quids in and you wont get annoyed with these kind of excuses!

Also, if you cant use all the features becasue of this, there should be a reduction in the price!

I have begun to think of Apple like Tesco. So big and wealthy, they dont care about their customers anymore, a dangerous business strategy in my view.

To be fair you have a point with the Hard drive features. But if third parties can develop "work-a-rounds" for the Airplay feature, apple should have done this in the first place and included it in the package.

They should either refund you, or provide you with a machine that is capible of doing what is advertised.
