Q: Why is my MacBook Air automatically saving Internet images?

I have discovered that my MacBook Air is automatically saving images from sites I visit on the Internet, ranging from Facebook photos on which I click to random logos and text boxes from sites I visit. I am constantly having to clear out this debris. I have scoured preferences in Finder and Safari but cannot find any setting that would cause this -- or stop it. Why would anyone want their computer to do this? I don't think it is unreasonable to expect that my computer will download only images that I ask it to download. How can I stop this?

How have you come to that conclusion if I may ask?

There is a cache file that does save things so it doesn't have to do it again, this likely is making the pages render faster as it doesn't have to redownload it again.

You should be able to clear the Safari caches in your preferences or via the menu option.

If you want things cleared out each time you quit, I suggest Firefox and the click&clean add-on, this can be set to really clean out the machine each time you quit.

To clean the Mac now, use Ccleaner and/or OnyX for OS X over at Macupdate.com, Softpedia.com

I don't think it's the cache file. If I go to "All My Files" in Finder, I see all these .jpg, .gif and .png files that are random images from the Internet.

Well the "All  Images" is supposed to show everything. Have you used the "clear cache/reset Safari" function?

Run the #12 OnyX routine here and reboot, then see if the same images you know are from the Internet are still there.

Step by Step to fix your Mac

If they are still there, perhaps you saved a web page as a html file someplace, which could include those images.

Sometimes you can drag a drop a image off the page by accident too.

If you know the name of the images, you can use the free Easy Find to locate them and delete them.

    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/11076/easyfind/

If you really want it to be gone (to many to delete), create another account in System Preferences, log into it and All Images again, it's likely gone now, Log back into the first account.

Move all your personal files (export your bookmarks file!) out of the account into the Shared folder (Finder > Go > Computer: open your boot drive and then the Users folder you'll see Shared.)

Then log into the other admn account and delete the first one, reboot log in and recreate the old account, move the files back in from Shared after logging into it.

Next if your worried someone can retrieve the images off the drive using special software, head to Disk Utility, select the Mainstosh HD partiton and Erase Free Space using the middle selection (Zero) and let it work.  They will be scrubbed from the hard drive now.

If you have a Solid State Disk, they can't be scrubbed, your going to have to duplicate a large movie until it fills up your SSD nearly full about 90% or so according to Activity Monitor in your Utilities folder then delete all the copies of the movie to free up space again.

How do I securely delete data from the machine?

I am having the same problem.  If I find a solution, I will post it here but clearing the cache is not the answer.

I had the same issues too. Do you guys have samsung phone? Do you back it up using kies? Do you have viber? or any app that uses your friends facebook pictures.there are some social apps that uses our facebook pictures including our friends that has the same app. I noticed that my viber saved all my friends facebook pictures into my phone. So when I backed it up, it saved to my Mac air. Even apps like go launcher, go sms, it saves emoticons pictures.

When i found out about it, I erased all those apps folders. Just make sure every time you backed up you phone erased those apps folders.

You might want to consider starting a new discussion. Since this one is a couple of years old, less people are likely to look at it. A new post would be much more visible. You can link to this one
