Q: Mail can't connect to the account

I have 2 mail accounts that Mail does not accept the password for.

I get the message frequently 'Mail can't connect to the account xxxx

I have changed the password but still can't directly connect via Mail.

I changed password in the Mail preferences to correct password.

I can open a browser app and go to the website for the email ISP and logon using the same password I would use to access the email accounts in question.

Why does Mail constantly give this error message?

This has been extremely frustrating.

I have had all the email from the 2 accounts redirected to a third email account that is having no problem with Mail.  I still want to access those 2 accounts directly from my Mac and through Mail app.

Is this a Keychain issue?  How to fix this one?

HELP!

Strange how almost all of the problems here are with Yahoo accounts.

Change to a better email provider.

Surely having spent more than £2000 on a new imac , Apple should sort it out. Maybe Yahoo and Apple should spend some of their billions on getting the job done!. So annoyed....cant download email - resorting to looking at the browser.

Apple are not responsible for any poor or incompatable coding in Yahoo, G-Mail, Hotmail etc. Try Yahoo's feedback page.

    Hi,

i have had the same problem with both yahoo accounts I have and it seems that it will periodically just stop recognizing your Yaho! password. I found an article that suggested to only use alpha-numeric passwords in iOS, but I recall reading something about that also for Macs.

In any case, changing the Yahoo! Password to only alpha-numeric got it fixed....for now. However, my other account's password is not just alpha-numeric....go figure...

    Hi Guys

I've had the same issue for months and I finally went into:

    System Preferences

    Mail Contacts Calendars

I clicked onto my 'yahoo' account and saw in the box on the right that my 'Mail' box was unticked for some reason...I ticked this & it solved my issue, no more asking for passwords

Thank you fulltimemuso, that fixed my issue. Notably, the problem was entirely on the Mac OS side, not the provider's web sites. BTW, my provider was Microsoft, not Yahoo or GMail.

Unfortunately, if you do not set up your Mail accounts carefully and properly, then that is nobody's fault but your own. It's a matter of 'ticking the right boxes'.

The comment made by petermac87 is incorrect and inappropriate. My settings had been working fine for months and I received e-mail via Microsoft and Gmail with no problem. I did not 'untick the right boxes' as was suggested. My assumption is that the change was made due to Apple's incessant attempts to have iCloud take over settings without the expressed permission of the user. I find that practice almost as annoying as that of people who presume to find fault with the experiences of others. Both are tedious at best.

iCloud has nothing whatsoever to do with Gmail or Microsoft mail. Petermac is correct and you are imagining things that do not exist.

iCloud does not 'take over' other mail systems, not even in your dreams.

In reply to Csound1: Okay, I agree that iCloud didn't change the settings, leave that out of the picture. However, I didn't uncheck the box to use Microsoft e-mail and neither did Microsoft, and I find it annoying that someone steps in from out of the blue and says that it was my fault that it somehow became unchecked. And with that, I'd like to end this discussion.

Ending the discussion is not part of your remit, all you can do is not participate in it.

I did not state anything about you 'unchecking' anything although clearly you do not know how iCloud works, leading you to imagine abilities (and faults) that it does not have.

You posted erroneous information, I corrected it for you.

    To petermac87 & Csound1

I got the same problems on Mountain Lion , 10.8.5 , with all of my mail accounts.

I finally solved it by going setup directly inside system preferences -> Mail , contacts, calendars,  as mentioned above.

So the problems is the Application Mail, the setting procedure is badly made.  Responsables: Apple official Mac Os X developer, Just admit the truth, That's all.

Btw I'm forced to reply in my third language English to this thread caused by some twisted fan boys persisted phenomenal replies.

What are you going on about? Perhaps starting your own post on your own issue would be a better choice.

What problem? Why do you have to reply in English? Start your own thread in your native language. Stop thread-jumping with such rubbish comments.
