my phone was stolen, then returned, but now unpassword protected... does this mean the thief hacked into it?

My wife's iphone was stolen and after 5 days was returned. She had her phone password protected but now, when she first turned it on after receiving it back, it is no longer password protected. Does this mean that someone tried and/or successfully hacked into her phone or is it just a random occurrence? Any help would be very helpful. Thanks in advance.

The only way to unlock an iPhone without entering the passcode is to restore it in iTunes. If your data (contacts, music, pics, ect...) is still on the phone, that would mean the person did in fact "guess" and enter the passcode. If all of your data has been erased, it is likely that they have restored it in iTunes.

I would restore again in iTunes as new or from a previous "backup" if there is one on file.
