Q: 10.8 External Display issue

MacBook Pro 15-inch, mid 2010

OS X 10.8

Dell P2210

Since upgrading to Mountain Lion, I can no longer get my external display (Dell P2210) to work - using DVI adaptor.

The Mac recognises the display and is outputting a signal, but the display constantly turns on and off. I can briefly access the settings in the monitor, where it says the resolution is 1840x1050 (60 MHz) - this monitor has a max resolution of 1680x1050 (60MHz) - and manually changing the display settings for the Dell does not fix the issue.

Everything else is working fine as far as I know.

*2 days ago, I was able use to an external monitor with a 1920x1080 resolution with no issues.

*The Dell still works with my old MacBook using VGA, so the monitor is not faulty.

Appreciate any assistance anyone might have with this issue.

    Try turning off Energy Saver.

Hi bodinp, did you had the issue with the display (from the MBP) shutting down unexpectedly ? (if you were using Lion you should had it). Now with Mountain Lion the MBP display work fine?... Please let me know.

This had no impact - problem still exists.

    serguti:

No, I did not have any issues with Lion (10.7). I have only experienced this problem since I installed Mountain Lion (10.8).

The monitor is not faulty, because I can use it with my old MacBook, which is running Lion (10.7). The MacBook Pro (running Mountain Lion - 10.8) is not faulty, because I can use it with a different external display I have at work.

I have checked the DVI cable and DVI adaptor on another monitor and MacBook Pro and they both work, so I don't know what the issue is - I can only recreate it with this MacBook Pro when it's connected to this specific Monitor, but none of the hardware seems to be faulty.

I see the P2210 also has VGA and DisplayPort connections. Do either of those work with ML (I notice you said the VGA port works fine with Lion)? Has anyone with this issue tried a different type of connection (vs. different DVI cables)?

I am using a Wacom Cintiq 24HD, I am having the same issue. I use a Macbook Pro with the lid closed, like it's a mini-tower, and my display starts to fire up upon waking it from sleep then shuts down immediately.

I am having the same issue connecting with a mid-2009 mpb to a 1280x1024 resolution monitor by VGA adaptor. Changing the refresh rate does not resolve the issue, but if I set the screen resolution to 1024x768, then my monitor stops going in and out. Obviously, this is not optimal.

Also, does anyone else see horizontal flashing lines in their monitor when it goes in and out?

At least yours is coming on!

I hooked mine up to my MBP 13inch with it open, and was then able to close it and have it function. Still no luck with plugging in the monitor while it is closed and trying to wake it from sleep.

I'm having the same problem since I upgraded to Mountain Lion. I'm using an MBA (late 2010 model) and a Lenovo display connected up by VGA.

I had this problem even when I had Lion. However, I was able to solve the problem by using a cheaper external monitor with a lower resolution (originally my external monitor was a full HD display). Then, the problem went away. However, I updated to Mountain Lion today and the problem came back. I am using the new 2011 Macbook Pro with a mini displayport to VGA adaptor to my old Samsung SyncMaster P2050 display.
