Safari 6 - new 'wide' tabs are infuriating and slow down computing.

Like many on the internet, it now appears, I have no idea why Safari 6 has decided to change the width of tabs to consume the entire screen..?!? Apart from being aesthetically ugly...

1) Productivity gets slowed down - and it's not just a case of getting used to it. The thing is this: In the 'old', smaller fixed length tabs, I may, for example, have 5, 6 or 7 tabs open at any one time. When I want to start closing these tabs down, I simply move my cursor to the tab on the right, find the 'x', and start clicking, WITHOUT the need to move the cursor for subsequent tab closures. NOW, in Safari 6, i close 1 tab, then have to f$%ing move the curser to find the next 'x' to shut it down, then have to KEEP MOVING the bloody curser to shut every tab down. This takes way too much time, and is very much a case of a backward step or 3 for Safari.

Apart from closing tabs, it also takes longer to switch between tabs. I know one can simply 'control tab' to switch between tabs, but if you want to do it ON SCREEN, and only have 2, even 3 tabs open, navigating to get there is just ridiculous!!!

2) As Apple has decided to trial this out, they NEED to at least have the option of turning the obesely wide tabs off. Why no customisation at all?

I do not feel that I should run third party apps to make my tabs work the way I want them to. I just paid $20 for this OS, and Safari was one of the main reasons I decided to purchase. I do enjoy the pinch to tab view, but I find the combination of oversized tabs and tab view to be redundant. No half measures! Lose tabs or don't, but do not ruin them. The simple fact is, Google Chrome has much better tabs in every aspect. Google Chrome tabs can be closed very quickly because they do not change size until you are done closing; the x is always in the same place!

Come on Apple

I just dictated this message using Dictation! ; )

I never noticed this until today (latest update to Safari). The OP mentions this in Januray...why did I not see this?

Regardless, it's a bad move in my book, and I hope it returns to the way it was. I use tabs heavily, and having to move my cursor all the way to the edge to simply open another tab is not only inefficient, but misleading.

I wonder whether Apple will read this =X

Why don't you use command+w to close the tabs? You can also speed up your mouse tracking speed to make it faster like Windows. Most former Windows users complain about having to move the mouse far in Mac OS because with Mac OS default settings, you have to move your arm to move the mouse cursor across the screen, where as in Windows you're only moving your wrist, and the experience between the two is similar when using a trackpad.

The many keyboard shortcuts in Mac OS like control+tab to move between tabs, control+shift+tab (to go backwards among tabs) and command+w to close active windows and tabs were meant to speed up computing for a user who is able to use both hands, and gestures on trackpads streamline computing when the user is only able to use one hand.

I didn't like them at first but I realized that wide tabs make it much easier to have multiple news articles open at once and move between them. I think Firefox and Chrome will soon have wide tabs. If only Safari would adopt the Firefox feature "recently closed tabs."

But I will say that this new safari is very slow when more than 3 tabs are open, and it shouldn't be considering I have 12GB of RAM.

There is a free extension called Glims that will restore your normal tabs. It has been around for years and works very well for a number of users. http://www.machangout.com

I must say that this is quite a nice plugin. I don't quite understand the move on the Safari developers' part to move to the larger tabs, but for me I'm just not feeling it — and this is after using this version of Safari for a sufficient amount of time to make a proper judgment. I did my best to give it some time and I tried to adjust, but it just doesn't work for me. I think it's one of those scenarios where the developers felt that the wider tabs might be more intuitive, but it may just be that this time they struck-out in their attempt to revolutionize/change paradigms.

Small tabs, and to the leftmost side of the browser window please. Thank you!

Oh and the favicon in the tab is a nice aesthetic touch. It kind of seems weird to have it in the URL bar and the tab, but it's cool. I wouldn't mind seeing the bookmarks bar links have the option to display the icons, too, à la Internet Explorer as of forever ago (and just about every other web browser).
