MacBook Pro (Mid 2010) crashes continuously

My MacBook crashes continuously for about a month now (started while using OS X Lion). My thought was to wait for Mountain Lion, make a clean install (formatting HDD) and then this should be resolved. Well, it didn't work. Still crashing while using more than 3-4 apps at the same time. All updates installed.

I really hope that someone is able to help me here. I already tried to run the Apple Hardware Test, but it's not available on my machine...

My guess it's that this might be a hardware problem, as it happened with Lion before.

This is the error report from the last crash (20 minutes ago):

To everyone trying a fix, please see this

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/gpu-kernel-panic-in-mid-2010-whats-the-best -fix.1890097/

basically, you should replace a single capacitor, a tantalum piece of crap, by an aluminum one. This capacitor is responsible for changing the voltage from 1.05V to 1.85V when the GPU changes to g-state 0 (high performance state). This is the time it crashes, because it is not able to stabilize the voltage correctly.By software, there is a fix also described in this link that prevents the GPU from getting to g-state 0, which means it won't be at its highest performance, but will work well and will be way better than only integrated graphics. This is also a bandaid, but it does work.

Final solution with high performance the GPU is to replace that capacitor. If replaced by a tantalum one, it'll work for a few years and crash again. Aluminum caps will solve it once and for all.

I installed gfxCardStatus on my MBP, and as suggested disabled the dynamic switching from the integrated intel graphics to the NVIDIA GPU, and have been unable to replicate the crash since. At first I thought the problem was in the NVIDIA processor, so I locked it into the integrated (intel) GPU and had no problems. I got to thinking and tried locking it into the more powerful NVIDIA GPU and as long as the automatic switching between the two is disabled, the MBP no longer crashes. Since I am a graphic designer and use GPU intensive programs most of the time, locking it into the more NVIDIA seems like the route to take. However, if you are only using your MBP for browsing, simple file browsing etc, you could also lock it into the Intel processor and save battery life.

The only other way I can see to fix the issue is to replace the logic board, which now in 2017 there is no longer a free replacement program offered by apple. In fact, I sent my MBP out for analysis and repair and apple refused to even look at the computer because it is from Mid 2010 it is now considered "Vintage." With a new battery, upgraded RAM and a SSD Hard drive, this "vintage" computer can contend with, if not surpass, a MBP that is a few years newer.

I am experiencing the same Problem with my MPB 15" mid 2012. gfxCardStatus works good, but sometimes my MBP starts, sometimes it does not as I am not able to deactivate that crappy NVIDIA CHIP at start. Apple wants to have 550€ for repairs...

I think it is ridiculos what Apple is doing here because I bought my MBP for nearly 2.800€ and it has defintely a problem with defect Hardware which was used by Apple, they already said it is their fault and now they say, sorry, the Problem did not happen do your earlier (during the program) now it is your Problem?!? My ASUS botebook for 400€ is still working and it is more than 10 years old.

So, could I please expect any Quality for my Money? Some People buy a car for that amount of Money.... Just want to get rid of that "fantastic Little car" and buy any Notebook, which might work and live longer...

Thanks for nothing @ Apple.

It seems that you may suffer from a well known problem from Apple: TS4088.

Your options:

- Get a Genius appointment ASAP and tell them about TS4088 - Insist! Because they will say it could be a problem caused by a non Apple "something".

- They will ask you, have you installed this already: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1469

- They have a special test to diagnose that issue which last about 30 min.

- Be ready to hear that the test did not reveal the problem - in fact, it seems that sometimes the test is negative even if the problem is there.

- Be prepared to hear them saying you have to buy a new logic board which costs £500 +

- If you are not willing to pay, they say your only choice is to wait for a software update from Apple to solve the problem.

Personally, I started to have this problem just like you after upgrading to Lion. I now have a fresh install of Mountain Lion on a brand new SSD and I just had the black screen of death 5 min ago.

Good luck

Jul 29, 2012 4:28 AM in response to pieralex

Thanks for your answer.

I didn't wanted to post yet, but it seems that I solved the problem. No black screen of death for more than 3 hours now and I stressed the system (Aperture, iTunes, Appstore, Google Earth, Mail, Skype, Safari, Word all open at the same time).

1 of these 2 solutions might have helped:

- I resetted the PRAM and NVRAM of my mac: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379

- Unistalled Adobe Flash by following their instructions: http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-mac-os.html

I will wait until tomorrow, if it doesn't happen again than this is the solution for this issue (at least for me).

Jul 30, 2012 3:03 AM in response to tim_ksa

Alright, the solution I mentioned above worked for about 24 hours. An hour ago there were 2 crahes again.

Now I found this website: http://www.neowin.net/news/nvidia-driver-problems-with-lion-on-2010-macbook-pros

(Lion and now also with Mountain Lion)

Installed gfxCardStatus and disabled the switch to the NVidia graphics, only using the Intel HD graphics now.

Let's see if this solves the problem.

I'll give an update if that doesn't help.

Jul 30, 2012 3:54 AM in response to tim_ksa

gfxCardStatus will definitely help but I am afraid it will not solve your problem unless you are happy to work with the Intel GPU.

You should definitely get a Genius Bar appointment and ask them to run a video test (issue TS4088).

I assume your Macbook is not under warranty unless you have Apple Care but the "replacement program" will be free if your computer is positive at the test they have for that specific problem.

Jul 31, 2012 3:53 AM in response to tonijjj

Installing gfxCardStatus helps, but only if you are happy to work with the intel HD graphics. I personally don't play games or use any software which needs the NVidia graphics, therefore this solution works fine for me.

Just check out the link in my third post.

If you need the high-end graphics, then you have to use the advice from pieralex in his last post (get a Genius appointment and run the video test TS4088).

Jul 31, 2012 11:36 AM in response to tonijjj

You just did the right thing.

To reply to your question, only a fraction of Macs manufactured between April 2010 and February 2011 were affected by this problem, basically, some of them received a faulty logic board and the first Lion update revealed the problem.

As I write, I just collected my Macbook from Apple Store after they finally replaced my logic board. I have been working all day long on my external monitor without a glitch.

As I am generally satisfied with the Apple Store service (it took 24 hours for the repair), I had to waste my time in two different Apple Store. I am still ****** off at that guy in the other Apple Store with his iAttitude telling me the problem was something I may have installed.

So the moral of the story, insist and insit on the TS4088 if you seem to have all the symptoms!

Aug 4, 2012 7:11 AM in response to tim_ksa

What I experience is:

My Macbook crashes if I use Chrome, Quicktime.. all the time!! they make force restart. Firefox works 'longer'

But when I plug second screen (monitor) Macbook works just fine. for hours and hours. I browse, play games... This is strange!

Resetting PRAM and NVRAM, uninstalling Flash player didn't help.

Hopefully update will be soon, otherwise I'll have to downgrade to Snow Leopard as I did with Lion.. that helped a lot.. I almost had no Crash..

Aug 5, 2012 4:12 AM in response to tim_ksa

If it helps http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US has just recently updated on 31st of July 2012.

It also stated that "Apple will service affected 15-inch MacBook Pro computers free of charge until three years from date of purchase. Apple will provide further extensions to this program as needed. This worldwide Apple program does not extend the standard warranty coverage of the affected MacBook Pro."

Before this update it was two years from date of purchase..

I have made an appointment at the Genius Bar for this coming Tuesday. I will let you guys know if they have resolved the problem and let me replace my Logic Board for free.

The date of purchase for my Macbook Pro 15" (mid 2010) was on March 31st 2010. So if this is the case everything should go as I planned.

MacBook Pro (Mid 2010) crashes continuously
