I have garage band 11 6.0.5. When I go on to garageband I see half of the loops all unusable. So the ones that I can use is just faded grey and when I click on it, it says the current softwre or apple loop selected is not installed into my computer and it says would you like to download it now. I click and it starts searching for a new software update but it shows everything is all up to date. Hope this helped you understand more of what i was ment to say 🙂

Did you buy GarageBand from the App Store, preinstalled on your Mac, or the boxed iLife version? If you bought the boxed version, reinstall GarageBand using the installer, that you can download from the Apple support page:

GarageBand 6.0.5

After this, you should be able to download the loops.

Also, if you did not actually erase your library, but installed 10.7.4 on top of your system, your loops may very well still be in your library; then you only need to reindex your loops, not to download them again.

To reindex your Loops, see the FAQ: Rebuilding the Loop Index in GarageBand

I downloaded garageband from the app store so I can't reinstall garageband.

If you bought GarageBand from the App Store, try the following:

  • Quit the App Store.
  • Move GarageBand from the Applications folder to the Trash, but do not empty the Trash.
  • Launch the App Store again and open the "Purchased" tab. Now you should see "Install" beside Garage Band. Press it and reinstall.

If all goes well, you can empty the Trash. Otherwise put GarageBand back and post back, so we can help you to find the Loops folder on your Mac.

Sorry for asking the same thing that you had already told me before. But I followed through all if it but I still have half of my loops all light grey and when I click on it, it comes out with the same thing " The software instrument or apple loop selected is not currently installed on your computer. Would you like to install the complete set of garageband intruments loops?" and when I click downlad now it searches through the software update but then a message says "your software is up to date". Do you think it might be with the new mountain lion which you need to use the full garage band? Right now I am using ox-lion.

Thank you . But right now I think my Mac got an virus after trying to install an update on GarageBand from link from the Internet and this same message keeps in spamming on my screen saying the software is released from the site. I can't stop the spam so I'll give your link that you gave to me later. Thank you very much you have been very helpful :)

hello !

I've ran into a similar problem, however situation is a little bit different.

I've purchased a MacBook Pro mid 2012.

Formatted it with Moutain Lion (don't ask why please, I've messed up 😝).

Since preinstalled iLife has vanished, I've reinstalled it from a previous application CD from my iMac.

Then updated GarageBand to 6.0.5 through the MacApp Store upgrade panel.

Right now I can't download missing loops within GarageBand.

I've tried your trick Leonie by downloading and installing again 6.0.5 update with no luck.

Any tips would be helpfull...

Thanks mates !

That is a different situation - after reinstalling Mt. Lion you should have downloaded the iLife Apps again from the AppStore, not installed from an older DVD.

I'd move your recent GB installation to the Trash, and then proceed like explained in this article: Scroll down to the bottom, where it eplains how to reinstall iLife after reinstalling the system. Probably you need to accept the preinstalled iLife apps to your Apple ID first.

Accept iLife: OS X: About OS X Recovery
