No sound on iPad without headphones?

I cannot hear any sounds on my iPad unless I use headphones. Randomly started to happen. I can only hear the on/off click. The mute button is off, checked the rotation switch, made sure notifications are all set to on for sounds for apps. Double tapped the home screen button and checked that the sound icon is not muted. Have switched on and off, even did a restore. The only way to hear any sounds is via headphones. As soon as I remove the headphones the volume slide on the home screen immediately disappears! Is there any other fix or is this a hardware problem meaning a trip to my nearest Apple store?

I have exactly the same problem.

I have tried reset, restore, checked mute and lock.

Only get sound if I have headphones in, once I remove them the volume controls disappear.

I have cleaned headphones socket, and tried some of the more bizarre fixs mentioned in the support areas.

Nothing.

My nearest Apple store is 2000km away......... is there a fix ?

An update on my iPad sound issue.

After I posted a rather passionate (frustrated) note here I was contacted by Apple Australia. I'd just like to say here that the contact, subsequent assistance with trying to resolve the issue, and the resolution offered by Apple was ........ humbling........ and rates as one of the best customer service experiences I have ever had.

I won't bore you with details, just say that after offering techical assistance over the phone (I live in a remote location) Apple offered to replace the iPad with exactly the same model completely free of charge. We've had the replacement new iPad for four months and everything is still working great.........there is peace in the house with the iPad providing the family all the usual stuff and SOUND, headphones or not.

Apple Australia, all the team who helped :-) Thank You ! Keep that level of service and this family will be Apple supporters for ever.
