i have forgotten my iTunes backup password

I have forgotten by iTunes backup password, well I doesn't recognise the one I thought it was.

I have updated my phone and backed it up but it won't let me re-sync, so my phone is blank (no messages, emails, contacts)

How can I reset the passsord to get this data back onto my phone?
