No I haven't got it working. I cannot get any response from sieve on port 2000 or 4190. I also cannot find the sieve config files that are on my lion server. Since the MLS was a new mini, not an upgrade, I don't think sieve is part of the server build.

I have given up and gone back to SLS - server side mail filtering is essential if you have a lot of iOS devices which cannot filter at the client side. I think Apple have really missed a trick here.

Stephen , could you post the output to the following command:

$ telnet 127.0.0.1 4190

AIU, the config files should be under /Library/Server/Mail/Config/Dovecot/conf.d/

You could try this command which updates your "locate" database.

$ sudo /usr/libexec/locate.updatedb

Wait for it to finish and then type

$ locate sieve.conf

Okay - I can find some sieve config files (90-sieve.conf) but a full port scan of the local host does not show Sieve listening on any port.

By contrast I kept an image of my 'old' abandoned Lion server disk which has sieve listening on 4190.

My ML server was a new Mac mini to replace my failed SL Sever (multiple disk failure). It was restored from a time machine backup of the SL Server to restore all the users, websites and mail stores. I don't know if this has impacted Sieve but I cannot get any response or find any information on how to proceed with this.

I would love a solution as my my late 2012 Mac mini server won't boot ML Server (i have tried all of the instructions on here) in any form so I have fallen back on a very old early core duo machine to run the time machine restore of my super reliable SL server.

chances are you have a conflict between allowable authorisation methods and what's set up in managesieve.

Have a look at Mail settings in Server.app - If Authentication says "Open Directory" then you will need to change the mangesieve authentication to 'CRAM-MD5' in webmail/plugins/managesieve/config.inc.php

Yep - migration can be problematic!, however , you can see where it went wrong in the install.log

Fundamental typo - 2012 Mac mini server won't boot SL (snow leopard) server. I have followed all the various instructions around target disk mode etc - I got it to boot on an mid 2011 Mac mini (non server - so 1 HD) but cannot get the same disk to boot the Mini Sever hardware. I think this is a deadend.

Fundamentally 90% of what the server does is provide email to 50 odd users both on and off the LAN using a mixture of iOS devices and Outlook. A number of users have huge mail stores - which they access using IMAP from iPads (hence need for intelligent server side mail filtering). Migrating those mail stores to a new build server is something nobody appears to know how to do - the permissioning on transferring the user directories seems impossible to solve - hence the route of restoring the SL server system image which then appears to 'break' the clean ML server install.

I am probably missing something but having tried to do this by several routes I keep hitting problems.

There's a bunch of things I can suggest , but I'll reply in one of the others you've started.

So you've got two probs.

1. Can't boot in target disk mode in SL on the new Mac Mini

2. Can't migrate SL server to new build ML 10.8.2 / OS X Server?

WEll Sieve is working in as much as I can create filters and it looks OK however the filters do not appear to work, I tried an out of office auto reply and it failed...

I did put in my address as an additional recipient by the way...

So there must be one small thing left to do...
