contacts on client machine suffer from disk I/O errors

Contacts are running slow if not at all on my client machines. I check the logs and it is having trouble with accessing the files and or writing the files. all other programs seem to work fine. Mail hangs but I think it is because of the contacts issue. It seems to have trouble reading the contacts list and dumps the list and attempts to rebuild from iCloud and the server. there are many .unknown files in the library. The logs state that there is a disk I/O error while accessing /Network/myserver/Volumes/MyBook/Users/username/Library/Address Book (this is from memory but it is close). The contacts work perfectly (as expected) if the user is logged into the server.

I am running 10.8 server and clients with shared home folders. the user folders are on an external drive. the drive does have permissions turned on. I have wiped out the contacts directory in the Library folder and it proceeds to rebuild but the problem is still there.

would rebuilding the clients from scratch help?

I wonder if it is working for anyone, or if it is a universal bug, I guess its taking a while for people to notice it because typical Network Home users are Businesses and Schools who would avoid upgrading to a new OS this early, but many people will be forced to run ML due to purchase of new equipment, which is the position we are in.

So has anyone got Network Homes on ML to work via AFP?

Sep 6, 2012 1:51 AM in response to Kevin Neal

hi Kevin

responses below:

1. Switch to Local Only account

- Can't do this as peronal accounts are bigger than SSD drives are client Macs

2. Switch to Mobile Home account

- can't do tis for reason above

3. Use network homes over NFS instead of AFP (does this work?)

- can't do as (in my case) user accounts are on server HDD (raided 1) rather than external drive to server

4. Downgrade to Lion, is this possible for Macs purchased after ML release

- this is what I did on client Macs - switched back to Lion* on all client Macs (except one MBA which I am keeping as ML for when 10.8.2 comes out) and issue as completely gone away (note: server is still ML 10.8.1)

So the issue is localised on CLIENT 10.8.x Macs

5. Something else

haven't got a plan B - and can only hope that Apple fix it in 10.8.2

*=I had previously created a USB stick Installer for Lion (+ I've got another USB Stick for ML so I can easily 'upgrade' back to 10.8.x) so it was easy to re-install. No problem with re-installing Lion as it checks apple with your appleID and in any case, I erase the SSD/HDD drive first.

I hope that helps

I do have a copy of Lion, but my only concern is installing Lion on a Mac that was released after ML might have some issues, so we are holding off purchasing new macs at the moment.

Looks like 10.8.2 will be out on either the 12th Sept or the 21st Sept, but Im not holding my breath, I have a feeling we might have to wait for 10.8.3, not baseing that on anything other than a hunch!

Sep 19, 2012 2:51 PM in response to Kevin Neal

just installed 10.8.2 on my MBA (which I had kept on ML) and I report....

Things are looking ok so far - Contacts hasn't crashed, nor has Mail so far.

I need to do more testing (and look at console messages) before coming to a conclusion....but its look good so far..... :-)

Thanks

Rob

ps - ML server is still 10.8.1 -- haven't tried updating that yet

Sep 20, 2012 7:11 PM in response to iDash

10.8.2 seems to have corrected the problem. I am still weary. I had to remove the contacts from sync for icloud have it erase all of the contacts on the mac, then have it rebuild it from icloud. The console still caught alot of messages from the address book.

Mail is alittle better. Does not take 60 seconds to open.

All of the computers and the server is on 10.8.2 and server 2.1

Thanks

10.8.2 is way way way worse than ever

Its utterly broken AVOID AVOID AVOID!!!!!

Both Server and client upgraded to 10.8.2

Using my existing account and whilst the previous issues with contacts / mail at the same time have gone away.... it seems my account is totally broken

it loses my iphono library location

it loses my itunes linrary location

both iPhto & iTunes keeps crashing ans it seems there are loads more IO errors - Witness below

This it a total an unmitigated mess

I have upgraded all the clients and the server to 10.8.2 and server 2.1. I did have some proboblems similar to that of before initally. I did have to remove icloud contacts and log out then log back in. It seems there is still some legacy problems with icloud. I had to log out of icloud then log back in to get messages to work. The contacts seem to be stable and never had a problem with itunes or iphoto. with messages I did go to the library folder and deleted some of the plist files. I also cleared out the address book/contacts files in the library folder.

It has take alittle work to undo the problems that 10.8.0 and 10.8.1 did but it seems to be working for me.

There are still problems with other areas where SQL databases are used.

All HTML5 database features, i.e. direct database access as well as the "local storage" functions, fail in Safari when you are using an AFP home directory. I can reproduce this on a fresh client/server installation.

@iDash:

iCloud and Versions are known not to be compatible with a network home folder.

ok, so i've done a fresh resinstall of ML on my MBA (erase and install) - stil getting IO errors. Contacts seem fine but Mail seems unrealible.

Also saw David's issue previously where there IO errors after woken after sleep as well.\

Still not good :-(

iCloud and Versions are based on an operating system feature called "File Coordination". It was introduced with Mac OS X Lion and requires that the local computer receives live information about all changes in all files. At this time, this cannot be done remotely via a network connection.

This is NOT an error, but a limitation as specified by design. You can see a warning message from OS X whenever you are closing a document saved on a network server that Versions won't be supported.

I don't expect that Apple plans to resolve this issue. They would need to invest a lot of money in something which cannot be used on iOS devices...
