Yes, it appears that it wakes up to check the options. With it unchecked on battery I only see a 2-3% loss of battery overnight.
Actually, it drains my battery quite a lot, which is probably because I have iCloud on and a lot of things on it. And as I keep using my iPhone it keeps changing things on the mac air.
They should just make a patch so that the tick box actually does what its supposed to, so that if you have it deselected it, it wont use wifi at all during sleep on battery power.
My new mac air seems to be using power nap when on battery even when deselected.
