Sometimes the video file is not in those folders, like when I was trying to download a protected Vimeo video file. What I did is use the Safari Web Inspector's Element Selection (shift + cmd + C) and went over the video rectangle with my cursor. Once highlighted i clicked on it.

Lots of lines of code opened up in the inspector's window. It is there that I found the video's link, hidden between the arrows and the lines of code:

Then I simply copied and pasted it in another window of the browser, and the video would appear. Then I simply right-clicked on it and saved it on my computer

The only problem I noticed is that the download would stop every few minutes. Maybe it has to do with China restrictions, or maybe not. But thankfully, clicking on the orange "continue downloading" button would work.

I haven't tried to download videos from other websites this way yet, but perhaps there always is a link hidden in the Safari Web Inspector that would allow us to download them!

you can download version 5 from CNET, however lion won't let you install it since "there's a "newer version of safari installed" already (so says the installer). also, you can't delete safari because OS X supposedly needs it. if someone can figure out how to delete Safari 6 then you could probably install v5 again.

since that will be difficult / impossible, i recommend restoring the old version of safari from time machine. another qualifier: i don't know if that will work since i don't have my time machine HD with me (i'm traveling).

this is a pathetic ommision from apple. who seriously thought that removing the activity window, one of the most useful elements of safari and one not found on most browsers, would be an improvement? wake up safari team.

I tried re-installing 5.1.7 but it immediately crashes now. Switching the Safari 6 file for the 5.17 file isn't enough; there are probably other files that need to be downgraded also but I didnt want to play around with that. I have found a weird, obtuse work-around, though.

1. Enable the Developer menu under Preference...Advanced.

2. Open the Web Inspector BEFORE you get to the page with the movie you want to save. You can actually go to the page first, then open the inspector, then hit back then forward to reload the movie page. Just hitting reload may also work.

3. In the left-most pane there will be a list of folders; one should be titled "Other". Reload the page to get this folder if it's not there. I don't know what to tell you if there is no "Other" folder.

4. Click the triangle to open the Other folder.

5. One of the things listed in Other should be the movie file; click on it.

6. In the right-most pane the full url of the movie willl be listed. Copy this URL just like you would've from the activity window.

This has worked for me. I'd rather have the Activity window back.

The video file doesnt HAVE to be in the "Other" folder. At the website I allegedly use to capture streaming TV shows, the .mp4 file is in a folder titled "Frames", then in a sub-doc called "video_ext.php" ...Once I see the video string (ie: 324t8C341db.720.mp4) I click on it and get the full url from the right frame/pane. I copy the URL and paste into Chrome...right click on paused video and choose "save as" and add the extension .mp4.

Hi Dom,

Download Safari 5.17 and open the DMG image but don't run the installer package. Open Pacifist. Drag the installer package file onto Pacifist. Once Pacifist loads the Safari package, click on the file listed named 'Contents of Safari...' to highlight it in the file list in Pacifist. At the top of the Pacifist window, click install. Pacifist will install the package it will probably ask a few times if you want to overwrite or replace existing like named files. I answered yes to all of those. When it is done, repair permissions. I also restarted before I ran Safari, I'm not sure if that was necessary. This process worked for me.

Regards,

Peter
