device manager does not have apple usb driver and my pc can't recognize my ipod either. please help

o i've had this ipod for a long time. it's a 4th gen or whatever the one with the camera is. one day i plugged in my ipod and my pc wouldn't recognize it. so i went on the internet to find a solution and figured out i don't have the mobile usb driver in my device manger. i do have the usbaapl64.sys thing and when i double click on it, it says that adobe cannot open the file. when i plug my ipod into my friend's computer, it can recognize my ipod. this could be because he has the driver installed. i have uninstalled itunes and bonjour and all that other stuff and redownloaded itunes again but it didn't solve anything. someone did say to use a registry cleaner after i uninstall itunes but i don't know if that is safe. can someone please help me. i haven't been able to connect my ipod to my computer in 6 months.

iPod touch, iOS 4.2
