what is the purpose of "back to my mac"? doesn't icloud already sync information from my other devices to my computer?

What is the purpose of selecting "back to my mac" on icloud? My husband and I share an IMac and an IPad and each of us has a new IPhone. I thought that ICloud automatically synced whatevever is entered into whatever device is being used (in our cases contacts and calendars) to our IMac and other devices.

Back to my mac is a way of manipulating your mac using an iOS device. For example, if you have a data file stored by some third party on your mac and can't get that file on the device, you can remotely access your mac from the device (a part of the mac's screen appears on the device), invoke the mac app and bring up that file.

Skidmore? I teach there.
