Nook for Mac isn't working with Mountain Lion. What gives?

Ever since I installed Mountain Lion a few days ago, suddenly my Nook software for Mac isn't working. It will open up, but it stops at the gray background with Nook logo. Is anyone else who has a Nook having this same issue?

I have the exact same problem. I checked for a new update for my nook reader at Barnes and Nobel and it says I have the latest version. So I would guess that neither Apple or BN were aware of the problem when Mountain Lion was released.

Hopefully BN will hear of the problem from users like us and issue a fix as an update to Nook for Mac reader soon.

I have the same problem with Nook for Mac. I did, however, found the following work around:

1. Control-click on the dark gray area outside the nook logo on the Nook application window. This should bring-up a popup with the options 'Back' and 'Reload'.

2. Choose 'Back'. This will clear the Nook logo and leave you with a completely empty window. Control-click in it again. This time the popup has the options 'Forward' and 'Reload'. Choose 'Forward'

3. Nook should proceed normally after this.

The Back and Forward work-around gets you in, but unfortunately then Nook will not quit, have to kill it. Preferences is also still greyed out.

This is after re-installing, many other things, and a little time with B&N support.

I'm not sure that delting the user files for Nook will be the solution either, as this problem exists on a user account that did not use the Nook app until after the 10.8 upgrade.

Another work-around is to use Nook for Web, http://www.barnesandnoble.com/u/nook-for-web/379003594

Here is another work-around, this one from late 2011. Looks like the problem is much older than the 10.8 update. I did notice that after the 10.8 install NOOK showed with the system apps, not the second page with the third party apps.

Open Applications in Finder

Create a folder there named NOOkformac

Move Nook for Mac.app to the NOOKformac folder.

Thanks for the workaround! I really can't understand how reading an epub is such a nice experience on the iPad, yet on the Mac there's no native Apple app for it...quite perplexing actually! Thankfully, most of the stuff I read are pdfs and ocassionally an epub comes along. Calibre is totally unfriendly to use and Adobe Digital Editions removes the margins completely, at least on this one I'm trying to read. Again, thanks!

i have the same problem but i have Snow Leopard. Only sometimes Nook would open and sometimes it won't. my only issue is some of the magazine that i bought won't open at all. i did call support, but all i got them is try restalling it. which i did but still didn't work. but then said it could be the software, but i am update and still got nothing.

One caveat: Nook Study renders books very differently than the full Nook app. Among other things, it seems to ignore fonts (or at least embedded fonts) completely, which can result in signfiicant differences in appearance.

You're usually better off using Adobe Digital Editions to read Nook content; Nook is based on ADE, so they *usually* render things similarly. From what I've read elsewhere, you can even read encrypted Nook content through ADE. When ADE asks you for an access key, type in the credit card number that was associated with your B&N account when you downloaded the book in Nook or Nook Study.

So, nearly 6 months later and B&N hasn't done a **** thing to fix this? All the more reason to buy an iPad and start buying Kindle books instead.

Lame, B&N. Lame.

For the record - I've never been able to get Nook for Mac to even sync correctly. I archive a book on B&N.com and it never archives on the Mac app when it says it's syncing.

This seems to be a generic prolem with the Nook and with B&N. I was given a Nook HD+ for Xmas, as I travel a lot and like to read. I was delighted, until I discovered that this is a piece of garbage, and the only thing worse than the Nook is Barnes and Noble's "support" for it. First off, the Nook would never talk to my MacBook - it was impossible to move anything onto it, and the MyNook software I downloaded would not, apparently, work with Leopard. I then spent an hour on the B&N chatline with some idiot who ended up telling me to upgrade the software on the Nook, which, of course, I could not do since the Nook wouldn't let me write anything to it in the first place. Duh.

Next I took it back to the store, and after an hour and a half of fiddling, the Nook "genius" made absolutely no progress. Now, to me the obvious next step was for B&N to try a different Nook, since it seems that the issue might be in the unit itself. No, all they offered was to charge the credit card again for another unit, while they refunded the charge for the first, which would take several days. Not a chance. Finally I simply told them that I either left the store with a working Nook, or got all my (wife's) money back. That is what we ended up doing.

How can a company put out a product for which you cannot even find the proper support pages? I would NEVER touch either a Nook, or B&N, again. I'll pony up the extra for an iPad, and get a properly constructed, programed, and supported unit.

I'm not sure that iPad + Kindle is comparable to MBP + Nook application. Nook software works just fine on the Nook color, two Android phones, Win XP, 7 and 8. Just the application on OSX is a problem, and without a good resolution

After a lot more looking around, it appears that source of the problem is the Adobe software on OSX, not the Nook application using using Adobe stuff. My problem on OSX did start after I installed a trial version of Photoshop, then uninstalled it about three weeks later. Unfortunately, I had other changes that I didn't want undo, so TimeMachine was not a clear choice to get back to a working Nook application. Not that the true cause matters to us end users; we just want stuff to work.

Dec 31, 2012 7:46 PM in response to arh0085

I've never bothered with a wired connection. For me, it's just syncing in general on the laptop. If I archive a book on the BN website, the Nook itself behaves properly when I sync it on wifi. But the Nook app on the MBP NEVER syncs correctly. Heck, even the iPhone app seems to sync correctly. If I archive a book on the Nook, the website knows it and the iPhone knows it. But the Nook app on the MBP does not. And it was never a problem with the Nook app on a PC.

That being said, I'll probably finally pick up an iPad mini so I'm not tied to BN alone. At least then I can buy Kindle books, too.
