Mountain Lion and Microsoft office programs

Why does Mountain Lion no longer support Word, Excel etc?! Help, what do I do to go back to the old system and access all my files?

Office 2004 and earlier are written in PowerPC code. The PowerPC code translator in Mac OS X 10.6.8 and earlier broke in Lion and won't be updated for compatibility. You need to purchase a newer version of Office or switch to a product such as OpenOffice.

If you wish to go back, reinstall the OS or restore your backup of it onto a blank partition.

Thank you! - Another question: I updated but lost all my filed emails! A whole bunch "came back" as new emails, but not my many many emails filed for my business! I had many important emails filed - am self employed so this is very alarming! Any suggestions? If I go back to my old operating system will they be there? I did a back up recently (for the first time!) - will my emails be saved there?

Thanks!

Entourage was discontinued in 2008 and replaced with Outlook. Were you using Entourage instead of Mac Mail for your email prior to upgrading to Mountain Lion? That might explain why you don't see any folders (I'm assuming you are opening Mac Mail). Have you tried starting Entourage?

Sounds like you are using some pretty old software, so I'm not surprised you're having problems

What version of MS Office were you using before? 2004? According to Roaringapps.com, only MS Office 2008 and 2011 are supported in Mountain Lion. If you are using a 2004 version of Entourage, Word, Powerpoint, etc, they won't won't run in Mountain Lion. Hopefully, the files are accessible though.

I don't know enough about the Microsoft programs, but I think MS Office 2011 for the Mac will support Entourage files. You will need up to date MS Office programs anyway, so when you upgrade those, you should try and see if you can get your Entourage files back. They are likely still on your computer, it's just that ML can't see or view them.

Here's where you can buy it online. Make sure you get the Home & Business version that includes Outlook, as well as Word, Powerpoint, and Excel.
