Q: "rejected" image stuck in outer space

In my library I have one photo in a "Rejected" folder. I can't see what it is, I can't throw it out, can't export it, can't change the rating, can't see metadata. In other words it seems totally orphaned.

How can I track this image down?

Do you have a filter set on your rejected album? All search filters in the Browser and the Library inspector should show "Showing All" or "All items" when you select the "Rejected" album.

If all searchfilters are cleared, and you still do not see any items in the album, check for an invisible filter, see Frank Caggiano's user tip here:

Images not appearing in browser, search filter is cleared

Run library repair. See Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics for details

I've done all three repairs in the Troubleshooting Basics. I haven't restored the library from Time Machine because this has been a longstanding issue and I'd loose a lot of work if I went back so far.

Now I'm left with the choice of deleting my preferences, but I don't want to lose all my presets, keywords, metadata and so on, and it seems a risky procedure just to track down one photo. Besides, if I remove the prefs and the problem is gone, how do I get my prefs back without recreating the problem?

The com.aperture.preferences file in the "Preferences" folder only stores the items you set from the Preferences panel; that is easily replaced. All your presets are in "Applications Support" in the presets files. These will be preserved when you remove the Aperture preferences from the Preferences folder.

I'm scared But I'll move the plist to the desktop, restart Aperture and see what happens.

Ok, it wants me to creat a new library, I have there is nothing in it, of course. Now what?

Ok I've imported my "Main library" and the problem is gone, I'll be resetting my preferences if I can remember them all.

What do I do with the newly created library? Should I rename it Main Library and throw out the old Main Library?

It would be easier to double-click your old library to open it as the current library. Then you do not have to bother to reconnect the originals to the versions.

One of the things that is stored in the Preferences is the location of your Aperture Library. That is why Aperture prompted you to create a new one, when aperture did not remember the path to the library. You do not have to create a new one. It is saver to open the old one directly.

I've double clicked on my old Main Library and it has opened without the problem file. Everything seems ok except I must fix the preferences, remap the keyboard and so on. I'll be throwing out the new library, is that correct?

Yes, unless you relocated already any referenced masters from your old library into the new one, bt I do not think so, since all your refrences in the new library seemed to be missing.

Ok, I will keep it for a day or two, just in case.

Should I put in my old preferences? Or, will that only recreate my old problem?

Better not, since their removal solved the problem. The preference file stores all the settings for the graphical user interface, and if the user interaction is faulty (buttons not responding, things that should be visible not showing), it is usually a good idea to remove them.

Ok, I think the problem is solved, though I'm not sure which post to mark as "solved". Thank you Leonie and Frank!
