BUG: Mountain Lion kills wifi speed when using airplay or time capsule

Hi,

Here is the situation, I have a MBP 3,1 Core 2 Duo 2,4Ghz.

I've upgraded from 10.7 to 10.8, and now, when I'm trying to use time machine on my time capsule (last gen), or airplay on my airport express (802.11n) the transmission speed drops from 160/200 to 6/13. (As you can see on the screenshots below. First image, without any of these two features / Second image, with time machine trying to find the time capsule drive / Third image, with airplay activate)

The time machine don't manage to find the time capsule drive and failed.

Airplay works for 3 seconds and stops. I've tryed airplay with itunes (the old way) and quicktime with the new airplay option, both stops after 3/4 seconds..

I made my 30Go time machine backup with an ethernet cable, it worked ok.

I still use my airport express with my iPhone without any problem.

And all other internet usages are working correctly, I can even acces to my data on the time capsule and copy files from with no problem, without this "transmission speed drop" situation.

I have 3 differents wifi signals in my (large) flat:

The time capsule broadcasts 2 different wi-fi n on 2,4ghz and 5ghz

and another Asus router broadcasts wi-fi b/g on 2.4ghz

I've tried the 3 different connections, all have the same "transmission speed drop" issue with airplay and time machine, and these two features don't work anymore.

And of course, I never had this situation with Lion..

Any solution, or is there definitely a bug with mountain lion handling my wi-fi card: AirPort Extreme (0x168C, 0x87)

I already reseted the PRAM and NVRAM; and did an onyx maintenance nothing changed...

Any help appreciate,

Thx

I can confirm that on 10.9 Mavericks Time Machine backups via Wi-Fi now work. I tried the Wi-Fi fix in the past but had to replace those files with the original ones because I couldn't join the Enterprise Wi-Fi at university. I'm glad that Apple fixed this issue. A thank you to you experts for helping us in the meantime!

Anyone having bad memory issues with there MBP 2007 with Mavericks? Ether the computer is all of a sudden memory hog or there is an issue with the Memory booster - RAM optimizer? there is a massiver memory drain unless the program is not functioning under X.9 properly?

I do have 4 gig of ram in it from the factory. Can not justify spending over $100 just to add 2 more gigs.

As with all memory issues, details are necessary to evaluate the problem effectively. I have Mavericks on a 2007 with 4 gig of ram and have had no issues at all. It's not as fast as a new one, but I have experienced no related 'hogs'. Do you have a specific program that is the 'hog' ? Might be better to start a new discussion. I was just so relieved that the Time Machine issue was fixed in .9. My only issue to date is Mavericks doesn't wake up cleanly sometimes. Had to press and hold the button yesterday. Some suggestions might be to reset the PRAM according to the Mfg instructions. Might help. I've had that work for issues with the SuperDrive. Who knows. If it's always an offending program or site, you might want to rabbit down that trail for solutions.

I paid the $85 or whatever it was to upgrade from 4GB to 6GB on my 2007 MBP a couple of years ago. Along with putting an SSD in the machine, it was the best thing I ever did. The old girl runs smooth as butter now. Well worth the money to keep the machine in the field as an eminently useable primary workhorse. It is very rare that I get stalls of any kind. (When I do the culprit is usually Chrome, which runs fast but also leaks memory all over the place via its ChromeRenderer processes.)

That Macbook is very long in the tooth now but I still love using mine. Keyboard and screen are preferable to anything that came after, not including the new retina Macbooks, of course.

what SSD did you put in it? I am considering that or some sort of hybri hard drive in it. It still has the orginal 200 gig drive which is so so very slow.

Had the computer totally rebuilt by apple little over year and half ago ; Logic board, top cover, LCD and backlight replaced after the GPU quiet working. it was two months outside the apple extended replacement. Since then i have run the computer 5 days a week about 8 hours a day with no issues other than the HD being slow.

I put an OCZ Vertex in mine. You might want to go with something with a higher reliability rating these days as you can get Intel or Samsung drives for a reasonable price (you couldn't at the time).

I've found that OCZs are not particularly reliable, but in a very specific way: they'll either die early or they'll be fine indefinitely. I've actually put OCZs into five of my machines. (Three Macs and two netbooks.) The Vertex has the best track record in my experience. I had nothing but trouble with the Petrol.

I remember the first time I opened up my 2007 MBP it seemed like terrifying brain surgery and took about two hours to change over the drive. Now I can open one up, change the drive and seal it up again in around 12 minutes. Once you get the knack of how to pop the keyboard layer off, it's all very easy. What I would recommend, though, if you do want to do the SSD upgrade, is putting said SSD in an external drive enclosure, installing OSX on it and transferring your contents, and running from it as your boot drive for a few days by leaving it attached as an external drive and alt-booting in. Once you've run it for several days and are happy that everything seems to be running fine, open the case up and switch out the drives internally.

It makes a world of difference. Not just for booting the machine up; everything runs smoother thereafter. Even when you glide the cursor along the dock, the things will just magnify up with no lag; towards the end of my time running with a platter drive, most everyday activities had a little bit of tangible lag that made things feel less pleasant.

I guess we're drifting a little off-topic here, though. Glad to hear that Mavericks now seems to run fine without any kext fiddling required. I have 10.9 running on one of my Mac Minis but haven't upgraded the MBP yet. Will probably do so within the next few weeks. Anyone seen any other issues running it on that model? (Mine is a 3,1.)

I put in a Crucial M4 it has a 6 gig transfer rate but gets knocked back down to the 1.5 gig once you put it in. With the feature of starting up where I left off enabled, It will take the 6 programs I normally run to a usable stat in about a minute. With the old drive which was a 7500 rpm Hitachi, it took about 4 minutes, opening up all the apps I was using at the time. I don't know of any way to bump the interface on the 2007 to a higher rate. When I first put it in and booted it, it almost scared me it came up so fast. Don't regret it at all. The M4 has good ratings of cost and speed although not the best of the best. But then again, the best of the best would be a waste of resources.

I'd like to watch this thread for a while to see if anything new comes up... so I respectfully ask that we stop discussing this other issue here (because I keep getting e-mail updates that have nothing to do with the issue at hand).

Thanks for understanding and sorry for breaking up the fun 😁

You can, of course, start a new thread and probably get better answers for having done so 😉
