Lost the ability to make desktop icons to YouTube?

Either a recent software update has changed how Safari works on my iPhone 3GS, or this is a user blunder. At one time, I could follow a link in Safari to its destination, then save that Web page on my phone as a desktop icon. One of my favorites is a YouTube interview with a famous musician. It's so interesting that every once in a while I click the icon and Safari opens to that YouTube page and I can enjoy the interview.

Can't make those anymore. Now, the instant Safari realizes I'm going to YouTube, it kicks me out and dumps me into the YouTube app. And the YouTube app won't let me make desktop icons of specific videos. Does anyone know a workaround?

Windows XP Pro, service pack 3
