My iMac 2008 will not read or write to CD. It will to DVD tho. I have tried cleaning the lens, and redoing the firmware to no avail.
I find it difficult to understand why it will read and write DVD's but not CD's.

I purchased a Samsung External writer and it doesn't work either. It did for awhile but not anylonger. I tried using the disk utility as well as Toast 11 Titanium........
Could be other things.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
Have you done a PRAM reset, CMD+Option+p+r...

Yes, I have zapped the PRAM and didn't help.
