.mts files from newly released Sony NX30

I'm trying to import the .mts files from the new Sony NX30. Using Log and Transfer on FCP 6.0.6, all the files except one transfers fine. Those files are less than 3 minutes. The 44 min. file has an error and won't work.

I tried using mpeg streamclip to access the file and it showed 'unsupported file'.

Searching the discussions, I've seen that Toast (vs9 and later) and VoltaicHD are supposed to convert the AVCHD .mts files. The negative is that Voltaic HD is VERY slow. The post was several years old. Does anyone know if that has improved? Is there a new standard as to how to convert them when the log and transfer doesn't work?

I imported earlier a 33 min. clip via Log and Transfer from the same NX30 and it took about 3 hours, but worked. In the Sony instructions it mentions that the SD card format is a FAT32 and does 2 GB max length files, but it must have combined them somehow because the 33 min file worked.

This new 45 min clip is from a wedding. Really want to have access to it 🙂

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Sharon

I verified in disk Utility and yes it is formatted Mac OS extended. Really appreciate you responding to try to help.

I have done further research and have seen ClipWrap2 mentioned. Would that be appropriate to trying to get this file usable? Of course it would be nice to know WHY it didn't transfer--whether it is a corrupt file or not. At least with my Sony Z7 there is a tape backup to the compact flash card. With this Sony NX30 there is just the SD card. The SD card is a 32 GB SanDisk Extreme Pro 95mb/sec HC1 so the specs should be adequate.

there's a free demo of clipwrap2 available. I think it will only do the first minute of the file, but it will tell you whether it'll work or not.

Are you sure it's compatible with fcp6? I know that some flavors of avchd require fcp7. That's true of the panasonic hmc150 which I use a great deal.

Did you copy the contents of the card to a local drive first? That's always a good idea. Make sure you copy the entire contents of the card keeping the folder structure intact.

And another thought. I've seen mpegstreamclip sometimes successfully import and convert files that it said were unsupported. Sometimes it's just a question of being patient.

Well, rats. I'm not sure what I have learned.

The clip is 44 min long. ClipWrap2 rewrapped 11 min (2GB) worth. It opened in QT, but I couldn't export it out of there as another format. When I imported it into FCP and tried to load it into the viewer, I got an General Error message, then an "Error: Out of Memory" message.

I had ClipWrap2 convert that same 44 min. clip to ProRes. It converted only the same 11 min worth. When I imported it into FCP, it did play. So I do have the first 11 min.

What about the remaining 33 min??? They are not the next clips in the sequence.

You paid for the full version of clipwrap? Are you sure the format you saved it out of clip wrap before you converted to prores was comptable with fcp6? I'd guess not.

There could be a corruption on the card. The cards are formatted in such a way that larger clips have to be spread over several files, There may be a utility available for repairing the card structure. You might do some googling.

Did you copy the card contents to a local drive?

Shane,

Thank you for your comments. You are probably saying more concisely what Michael has been trying to tell me and my brain wasn't computing.

One thing I don't understand though, is why ClipWrap 2 only did 11 minutes worth? At that point FCP was still out of the equation. How could it be FCP's problem as I hadn't yet taken it into FCP. I transferred the file from the SD card onto a local drive. Did the ClipWrap2 from that and it only gave me 11 minutes. Hadn't even gotten into FCP yet.
