Aug 20, 2012 9:02 AM in response to Bob Timmonsby John Clouse1,Thanks!!!! This solved my problem!
I also downloaded the latest Utility that would work with Snow Leopard: 5.6.1.
Now, if I could only figure out how to reward you!

If I was really concerned about the "points", I would not have even answered the question.

Sep 7, 2012 9:23 AM in response to billymajby DEWacht,The recommendation in this thread from sethertonb on Aug 17th totally addressed this problem for me. Here is the link suggested by sethertonb that did the trick...

Took me a couple of tries, so be patient as it does work.

Sep 9, 2012 3:49 PM in response to billymajby RickMorris,I am feeling like paying to up-grade my Mac was a down grade in a way. I can't believe the people at Apple did not think about this ahead of time. My old iBook is proving to be a more functional tool today than my iMac with 10.8.1. Apple used to make things so easy.

Sep 10, 2012 7:55 PM in response to billymajby Daveduck,Simplying copying 5.6.1 from a Snow Leopard disk to my ML disk worked fine. App opens and all seems well.
Took reading the links in this thread to figure that out, though, so thanks.

Sep 12, 2012 12:51 PM in response to messonicby missed_call,False Bob.
Lion:
You don't need a machine running snow leopard. You need to download the 10.7 version of the airport utility:
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Mountain Lion:
The application works just fine, but the installer does not. You can download a zipped version of the app from here: http://bit.ly/NheUu6

Sep 13, 2012 1:43 PM in response to billymajby Shiba Dog,I had the same problem, until I downloaded Pacifist app for Mac and pulled the 5.6 app out and extracted it to my desktop, then moved it into my Applications folder. It works fine on my Mountain Lion MacBook Pro, and it took me a total of 5 minutes.

Sep 29, 2012 11:27 AM in response to billymajby willchase,Hi guys, after experiencing this same problem, I've tried every one of the solutions proposed here. I'm able to configure my Airport Express, but after clicking "Update" in the Airport Utility v5.6.1, the AE fails to restart and can no longer be seen on the network, even if it's connected via Ethernet to my router (a 2Wire). The only way to get the AE to appear again is to reset it to factory settings. Then I configure it again ... and ... same result.
I've tried adding the AE to my network as an extender AND simply as an airplay device. I've tried both WPA2 Personal and WPA/WPA2 Personal passwords (my 2Wire uses the latter, so they should be compatible).
As baffled as I am frustrated, as I had this configuration working for YEARS up until upgrading to Lion and moving to a new home and a new 2Wire router. Suggestions most appreciated.
Thanks.

Level 1 (4 points)
Mac OS XI just bought two used AEs and am running Mountain Lion, thus could not see the devices. I also have an Airport Extreme as my mian router.
Since my iMac is from 2010, I used time machine to go back to my older version actually it was 5.5 of airport utility and was completely able to find and configure my two new/used Airport Expresses.
I renamed the program "Older Airport Utility" and will keep it in applications for future use. I find it utterly amazing time machine worked so well, however rediculous Apple's latest utility on Mountain Lion does not support the older devices.
It's kind of like an iPhone 4 can't have Siri or turn by turn Nav. Those nasty Apples!
