http://frank.is/mountain-lion-and-the-old-airport-utility/
After this program did it's thing, and the icon showed up on the desktop,
I renamed it to "Airport Utility Old" and dragged it to the Utilities folder.
This way they both appear right next to each other.
Also, if you had changed your wireless password,
(probably why you're reading this thread),
the Airport Express still won't show up, even in this old Airport Utility.
What I did is temporarily put my Wireless Password back to the old one.
Then I unplugged the Airport Express, and after I plugged it back in,
the light was green again.
Now when I ran "Airport Utility Old", I could now see the Airport Express.
Went in to the configuration, and changed my password to the new one,
and then of course changed it on my regular Airport too. All is well now.
You could also do a factory reset on your Airport Express, but I thought
this would be a little easier.

Oct 10, 2013 5:08 AM in response to sethertonbby ramfrmcairo,Does work like a charm! thanks for sharing the script. One tip, on my machine i ended up having to run the 5.6.1 utility first (mount the dmg) and then run the script and the old utility was indeed installed on the desktop.
Thanks again!

Oct 24, 2013 1:25 PM in response to dahveedby Ninad_135,I had same problem but I solved it.. It works with OSX mountain lion & maverick (tested successfully).
You have to follow simple steps given below1) Install Wine (WineBottler) from here : http://winebottler.kronenberg.org
(This is the software which runs windows programs (.exe files) on mac)
2) Install Airport Utility 5.5.3 for windows from here :http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1391
3) Now you can open airport utility through wine & configure your old airport express units.
Thanks & Enjoy.. -
Nov 7, 2013 10:05 AM in response to sethertonbby Craig Volpe,Unfortunately the workaround for Mountain Lion posted by sethertonb doesn't work with Mavericks
I also tried the Wine Bottler approach, and while I was able to get the Windows version of Airport Utility 5.3 5.5.3 to open and recognize my Airport Extreme, I couldn't get it to see my Airport Express. I tried doing a factory reset of the Express but still no luck. Has anyone else been able to get it to work with Mavericks?

Support for the original, 9+ year old Express is gone in Mavericks.
For Windows XP SP3, Vista SP2, Windows 7 SP1 or later, use AirPort Utility 5.5.3 for Windows

Nov 7, 2013 10:05 AM in response to John Galtby Craig Volpe,Ah, sorry, I said I used the 5.3 version of Airport Utility for Windows, but I meant I used the 5.5.3 version. I can't get it to recognize the Express when running via Wine (but it does recognize my Airport Extremewhen I plug it in).
Any ideas?

Nov 7, 2013 10:13 AM in response to Ninad_135by Craig Volpe,Ninad, thanks for the Wine suggestion. I was able to get Windows Airport Utility 5.5.3 to run and recognize my Airport Extreme, but it doesn't see the Aiport Express after doing a factory reset on it. Any suggestions?

Dec 10, 2013 9:06 PM in response to Zyniker13by Batsheep,Thanks so much for posting this Zyniker13. I'd spent a frustrating afternoon trying to figure out how to get round this problem. Probably naive of me but having been a promoter of Apple for years, I've been shocked at the level and blatant nature of the deliberate hardware obsolescence built into the process. Very interesting documentary about where this practice started (and where it's leading) here: http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/light-bulb-conspiracy/

Oct 13, 2014 2:21 PM in response to billymajby daniel_brazil,Search in google for "corey mahler 5.6.1 mavericks".
It will return a result that Corey Mahler explain how you can configure your AirPort Express 802.11g with AirPort Utility 5.6.1 in Mavericks.

Dec 12, 2014 2:55 AM in response to Bob Timmonsby Alan Mushnick,I am trying to set up 2 older airport express units just for Airplay. They don't show up on my OS 10.9.5 iMac. If I get the older 5.6 utility, will they show up as wifi devices? What about configuring them with an ethernet cable first? Will they then show up? Is it easier to download the utility with the link and the workaround or by Time Machine? I have never tried any Time Machine stuff. I can just find the old utility, then save it somewhere, and it will show up as a current application? It seems really ridiculous that Apple has not addressed this. I am an apple fan because of the usual ease of plug and play. May as well go third party for airplay hook ups if it is this troublesome.

Feb 27, 2016 10:17 AM in response to billymajby rrafferty,This solution worked for me and hope it helps others. You can download an older version of the Airport Utility via this link. It says it works on Mountain Lion, but it will run on El Capitan too!
