Apple TV 3rd generation does not work with 1080p resolution

Hey!!

Hello,

Recently I bought a Apple TV 3rd generation (1080p) but it is not working on Full HD Resolution on my Samsung TV. When I search for 1080p resolution option in the "TV Resolution Menu" it does not appear. Only 720p and 480p resolution are avaliable. I am sure that my TV is compatible with the 1080p resolution because I have already connected some devices in this input thriugh 1080p resolution.

Please, anybody knows what can be happenning?

Hey!!

My Apple TV is the 3rd generation (1080p written outside the box and in the manual).

My TV is able to show 1080p resolution. I am sure about it!!

I saw this in another discussion but I don't know if it is correct:

"If the TV isn't telling the Apple TV that it supports 1080p, then the Apple TV will not offer this resolution."

Please, does anybody know if Apple will release a Apple TV update software to correct this problem?

Thanks again for the help!!

I have the same issue, but believe that I may have uncovered what the problem is... I have a Hitachi large screen HD TV (1080i) and my 3rd gen Apple TV only allows me the select 720p.... well, I think the problem is that 1080i is NOT the same as 1080p....

As you probably know, the "i" or "p" at the end of a resolution indicates "interlaced" or "progressive," respectively. This difference is rarely visually apparent, but does matter. Interlaced resolutions alternate even and odd lines on the screen, rapidly combining to form a cohesive image. Progressive resolutions are sent all at once. The implications for HDMI become obvious; 1080p requires twice the bandwidth than 1080i.

After researchign this a little, it seems that 1080i is considered similar as 720p.... so in my case, my TV supports 1080i (which probably is similar to 720p) and therefore Apple TV doesn't offer the 1080p resolution option...

In your case, your Samsung TV may support 1080i as well, but not 1080p... it seems the devil is the details here as well.
