Thanks! Yes, I was going to ask Telus (my Carrier) to unlock the phone. It is a company phone, so anything shady is out of the question. Part of this whole unlocking need is to prevent the company having to pay for my holiday calls - especially roaming charges on incoming calls!
I am mainly concerned about the need to sync via iTunes once I insert the new SIM (ChinaMobile most likely) at my holiday destination. Since I don't plan on having a computer with iTunes with me, this is an issue.
On their website, they say:
"You can unlock your TELUS issued Apple iPhone for use with other mobile carriers.
Call Client Care to request the phone unlock.
The Client Care representative will complete the steps to unlock your phone.
Connect your iPhone to iTunes and wait for the message "Unlock Complete. Congratulations, your iPhone has been unlocked. To set up and sync this iPhone, click Continue".
NOTE: An Internet connection is required in order for iTunes to unlock your device.
Your iPhone is unlocked."
However, on the iphoneincanada forums, there seems to be wildly different reports on whether this iTunes connection was needed or not. Hopefully some-one here at the apple forums know what the real deal is.
