Email in Exchange inbox disappear in Mail

I have a slightly different problem. Mail syncs with Exchange fine and I have not experienced the changed mail server issues the others have been experiencing. However, once in a while, the mail from my Exchange inbox would all disappear from Mail as if the whole Inbox is empty (save for emails from other servers like Gmail, iCloud). Originally, I thought it was a sync problem so I deleted the account and then set it up again and waited painfully for everything to sync back in. However, this phenomenom still happened randomly once in a while. This time, I just close the Mail program and restart it and then everything is back to normal.

While this is a workaround, it is nevertheless very annoying. Has anyone else experienced this with Mail and Exchange server 2007? Any ideas how this can be fixed? Thanks.

This has been suggested several times in the past, so it's not new, but the bad part is that I'm not sure it's a real fix, as it does just force the app to re-download the mail messages from the server, as far as I understand the inner workings of the mail system set-up.

I have been running with the auto-discover feature on for the last month or so, and have not lost mail in that period, but I'm not sure what has changed. Mail-server users do not get any messages if the server software is upgraded or changed or the the IT guys tweak a setting or two, and that makes it so hard to identify these issues.

For the the autodiscover feature to work correctly, the server and other stuff - as Certificates - need to be set up correctly, otherwise it creates problems, as this posting explains:

"Autodiscover is a feature that allows any Mail Client that supports Autodiscover to configure the appropriate server settings for communication so you don’t have to input everything manually. It’s very handy. Unfortunately, you can end up with a lot of headaches related to Autodiscover when you start having to deal with Certificates. "

Besides all the settings and certificates stuff, there is can occur issues if (when) mail-boxes are moved beteen server-computers etc. like described here:http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124251(v=exchg.150).aspx

These things are so often so complex, that even the server people does not know all the details. For example, at one point of time I managed to see that the server software, my working mail is depended on, had not been upgraded for more than 8 versions âš  and pointed that out as an potential cause for lack of some services that would also benefit Mac users. Afterwards it took the IT department another 3-4 months before they had time to do the upgrade.

My conclusion is that most of this is beyond the control of the end user (you and me) and that one of the best things one can do is to report back to the people responsible for the mail server.

Why not use some other mail program that actually works instead of jumping through all the hoops that Mac mail make you do every time it stops working correctly. If you do a search of Mail problems you will find countless posts about ongoing problems with Mac Mail. Just use any other mail program and leave these problems behind.

I recently saw a post that actually said, the poster admitted, there was a bug in Mac Mail. There are many bugs in the built in mail program.

Could somebody please confirm that Kimrons solution is the only avialable work around?

Trying to fix this on a 10.7 macbook, cannot find the check box in Mail preferences so planning to upgande to mountain lion just to be able to use this workaround.

Thanks!

LowLuster, Nice thought - just move away from the problems, and go to somewhere without any problems!

Just a thought: If such a solution exist, why has nobody suggested it before? What's your own solution?

My guess is that there are issues related to most technologies. A search after "problems and xxxxxxx 8 mail" - produces 402.000.000 answers.

Great list - thanks - several looks very interesting e.g. Postbox. 🙂

However, for those of us that are forced to connect with an Exchange mail server, there are limitations, as the mail app needs to support that. Unfortunately those I have checked out did not do that.

I'm currently testing the add on to Mail called MailHub - looks promising so far. http://dervishsoftware.com
