This has been suggested several times in the past, so it's not new, but the bad part is that I'm not sure it's a real fix, as it does just force the app to re-download the mail messages from the server, as far as I understand the inner workings of the mail system set-up.
I have been running with the auto-discover feature on for the last month or so, and have not lost mail in that period, but I'm not sure what has changed. Mail-server users do not get any messages if the server software is upgraded or changed or the the IT guys tweak a setting or two, and that makes it so hard to identify these issues.
For the the autodiscover feature to work correctly, the server and other stuff - as Certificates - need to be set up correctly, otherwise it creates problems, as this posting explains:
"Autodiscover is a feature that allows any Mail Client that supports Autodiscover to configure the appropriate server settings for communication so you don’t have to input everything manually. It’s very handy. Unfortunately, you can end up with a lot of headaches related to Autodiscover when you start having to deal with Certificates. "

Besides all the settings and certificates stuff, there is can occur issues if (when) mail-boxes are moved beteen server-computers etc. like described here:http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124251(v=exchg.150).aspx
These things are so often so complex, that even the server people does not know all the details. For example, at one point of time I managed to see that the server software, my working mail is depended on, had not been upgraded for more than 8 versions âš and pointed that out as an potential cause for lack of some services that would also benefit Mac users. Afterwards it took the IT department another 3-4 months before they had time to do the upgrade.
My conclusion is that most of this is beyond the control of the end user (you and me) and that one of the best things one can do is to report back to the people responsible for the mail server.
