Can't remember how to shut down apps not being used. Wastes battery power!

Can't remember how to shut down apps not being used. Wastes battery power!

Double click the home button. Hold down your finger on an app in the bottom bar. When they start shaking, push the X to close them.

No, not generally. Most of the apps that appear when you double tap the Home button are merely recently used. Very few apps are actually running in the background. Notable examples would be apps that are playing music and navigation apps.
