Expanding photographs by touching in IPad

Hi,

I am working on an ebook with lots of photographs so I want to get this right before I get too far into laying out the ebook.

I selected one of the "Basic" template. The template has graphic placeholders so I dragged in image into the placeholder and my image appeared. Very cool!

I finally get my IPad hooked up to preview my ebook and notice that I cannot touch the photograph and have it expand to fullpage. After some research I think I need to be using the Gallery Widget but I will never have more than one image in the widget.

Do I need to use the Gallery Widget to allow the reader to expand the photograph to fill the IPad page? Seems like overkill, but if that is the only way then I guess I need to do it. If I need to use the Gallery Widget is there anyway to include a border and also remove the arrows at the bottom of the widget?

Thanks,

Rhek

The interactive image widget is more convenient to place but I think it depends more on whether you want the border or not: The interactive image widget places the image almost full screen with the exception of a small grey border -- maybe 20-30 pixels in width. The gallery gives you a full screen image without border on a black background.

See http://www.davidebarranca.com/2012/04/ibooks-author-fullscreen-images/ for examples.

There's also the issue of consistency if you want the single image to appear fullscreen in the same format as your galleries.

I'm a little surprised at the question in the first place. I never had a problem with images not expanding to full screen when tapped. I've always simply dragged the image file onto the page, sized and positioned it. When viewing the book on the iPad, tapping the image shows it full screen.

There must be something in the way images are added or something in the object settings that prevents them from going full screen when tapped.

Hi,

I decided to use the Gallery widget for a book I just finished and it worked out great. Thanks for all the advice.

Now I need some more advice with another one of our books I am converting to ebooks and images not expanding. The book I am currently working on uses the Basic template and has hundreds of instructional line art. I am dragging the image on to the page. I then use the Inspector and click on Widget. I then check "title" which also adds a background and a 10px margin. I then resize the widget to 460 x 424 or 460 x 668.

When previewing the ebook in portrait orientation all images expand, but when viewing the ebook in landscape orientation only the images that are 460 x 424 will expand. The images that are 460 x 668 will not expand unless I do the following so I am beginning to think the widget is bugged.

1) View the book in portrait orientation.

2) Click on the thumbnail of the image that is 460 x 668. The image will fill the screen.

3) Rotate the book to landscape orientation. The image will rotate.

4) Close the image.

5) Now in landscap orientation the image will open.

Bug? I think so. Now my problem is do I switch widgets or hope for a fix while I am working on the book or is this the way the widget works. For this ebook we like the gray title bar and the white border around the image when expanded, otherwise we would use the Gallery widget like we did on the previous book.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Rhek
