MacBook Pro with Retina Display reports there is no connected camera

When I load PhotoBooth My new MacBook Pro with Retina Display tells me there is no connected camera. It's a new system and the specs say there's one built into the display, is there some setting I need to turn on?

It's a problem with your computer, more likely than not. Did you purchase it within the last 14 days? If so, you can return it and get a new one, same configuration, few questions asked, or get a full refund. Before you do that, however, check out one thing: go under the Apple menu to "About This Mac" and then click "More Info..." then "System Report...". Look in the Hardware section under USB and see if you see "FaceTime HD Camera (Built-in)" installed. If not, then the system is simply not recognizing the camera.

Take it back to the Apple Store as soon as possible. Even if you're not in your 14 day 'grace period' you still have (at least) a one year warranty and they should be able to repair or replace the model.

Good luck,

Clinton

Same was happening with my Facetime camera on the new MacBook Pro Retina.

It started to happen when I tried to use the Facetime App while Skype was on. Then it went away... no app was able to open it again (I didn't try the Facetime one)

It came back when I closed Skype, and then open the Facetime App. It seems to have reset it, now it works for all apps.

I hope it would do the same for you!

cheers!

Same here. I was on Skype and all of a sudden it stopped working. No other application was able to find installed camera either (FaceTime, PhotoBooth). System restart did not help. But 20 min later it started working again. So now, it was a long call, over 2.5h when this happened. It just reminded me that for example users of Sony NEX7 camera were complaining of sensor overheating during filming and camera shutting down. I understand that sensor in my mac is tiny but then again it's crammed in within this super thin shell with the screen (producing some heat) underneath and not much chance of this heat dissipating easily (no vents in the upper case). Can it be it shuts down because of the heat? Did anyone have similar experience?

Same problem here. I have had the MBP Retina for several months. The camera was working fine with Skype, FaceTime, etc. As of recently the camera stopped working. Only after restart it appears working but only until wake up after hibernation. I noticed that the troubles with the camera started following an update of iTunes to version 10.7.
