Cursor disappears in Mail 6 on Mountain Lion

When I am typing an eMail, especially when replying to an eMail, the cursor suddenly disappears. In order to get the cursor to come back I have to save the message and close the message then reopen the message.

Has anyone experienced this problem? It is only since upgrading from Lion to Mountain Lion that I have seen this problem.

Steve

I THINK I FOUND THE CAUSE:

When I am typing a message in Apple Mail, then I go to another program (can be anything - Safari, TextEdit, Contacts - doesn't matter) -- if I then choose "Hide Others" (i.e. hide other programs so only the one to which I've just gone is visible) then when I go BACK TO MAIL - the cursor is gone.

This happened all the time for me since I use DragThing with the preference to "Hide all applications when switching to a new application". So each time the "Hide Others" command was given. By not using that preference in DragThing - my cursor is always there when I go back to Mail.

BUT if I choose "Hide Others" while in the other program, when I go back - cursor hidden. (and I have to touch another message in Mail to reactivate the cursor).

Hope this helps but it demonstrates the cause, but not how to fully correct it.

Comments welcome.

Stephen,

I have exactly the same problem, and I also use DragThing. I initially thought that DragThing was the culprit. I NEED the "Hide Others" functionality.

However after much testing and some discussion withe the author of DragThing, I can tell you this:

DragThing causes the problem just as you have described. However it's not DragThing's fault and it can't be fixed in DragThing! The exact same problem happens when ANY app internally uses the system fuction to minimize all others. Even with DragThing not installed, it happens when I use Keyboard Maestro to call the hide others function, or even just with a simple 3 line AppleScript to hide others.

So the bug is in mail.app / Mountain Lion.

I have tied this problem to "application switching" (at least in my case). As long as I stay in Mail the text cursor seems to remain visible but if I switch applications in the middle of an email, when I come back to the Mail App the text cursor is gone. (note this is the "text cursor" not the mouse cursor) The only way I have figured out to get the text cursor back is to attach a photo or file. As soon as the attachment comes into the email, the text cursor returns. I then delete the attachment. Long winded way but it is what I have found that works so far. I have no idea how to fix the application switching and loss of text cursor issue. It is a royal P.I.T.A. but at least I have a workaround.

I've been experiencing the same problem and although I don't use Dragthing, I do use iKey and all my application switching shortcuts in it include a "Hide Others", so it appears that this may be the culprit.

It is slowing me down but for now, I just click on another mail app window and then back to where I was typing and all seems okay. It is a relatively minor annoyance and hopefully it'll get fixed soon.

Howard

Also having the same problem. If I click somewhere to insert text in the Mail document, and the cursor has disappeared, if I start typing the text is still inserted in the right place. But I'd like to be able to see the cursor to confirm my insert position.

I haven't noticed if this is happening in any programs other than Mail, but now I'll keep an eye on Photoshop, too.

I will try the right clicking workaround and the other "toggle between new document and existing document" workaround and see if either of these help.

PS - I'm not using DragThing

I found out (for me) that the problem is tied to a little 3rd party app called ASM which "Hides Other Apps" when you switch between them. This falls right into line with with the "Hide Others" suggestion as the problem since I am sure that this is what ASM's script is doing? Things are fine as long as I stay in Mail but if I do switch to another application the text cursor dissapears when I return to Mail if ASM is active. If I "add an attachment" then the text cursor returns (I then delete the attachment and carry on). I haven't found another way to get it back??? Does anyone else have a solution to get the cursor back when it has disappeared?

Sadly, for the time being I have switched back to 10.6.8 so I can get my work done and not have this aggrivation with Mail.

Strange that two OSX 10.8 updates (10.8.1 & 10.8.2) haven't resolved this issue? It would seem that Apple isn't listening or taking this bug seriously?

Sure enough, I was able to replicate the vanishing cursor by hiding Mail and going back to it.

I also tried one of the workarounds proposed here (create a new Mail document and then return to the document with the missing cursor). Sure enough, it restored the cursor.

I guess I should have waited for 10.8.3 before installing Mountain Lion! Hopefully, Apple will fix this by then.
