i have tried all of the suggestions on blogs to re start my ipod but i am still getting the red X. it is an ipod classic. where can i get it fixed. do i send it back to apple. and if so where is the address. any help would be much appreciated. thank

Help!!! My ipod classic was working fine. Then bought a little gadget for my car to play my ipod in the car. Everything was fine. Listening to my ipod in car. Delighted with myself. However. left all plugged in and when I went into my car again. Neither the ipod or the little gadget was working. So I decided to charge my ipod. Did this and now have tried every blog to get it working and no joy. It is still showing up the red X no matter what I do with it. My question is: is it finished, Should I just buy a new one? or can I send it to Apple to be repaired or did the little gadget "break" it.??

Any help would be most appreciated as I am tearing my hair out trying to fix it now for THREE days.

If the iPod is still under warranty, bring it in to the Apple Store.

Check out this Apple Service link

Or this Apple Contact Sites

I cant comment on the little gadget, but normally leaving the iPod Classic, powered on, in a car, unattended, is bad, as it will overheat and damaged the hardisk.

HI, and thank you for your reply. I am a bit confused however as I would have thought that once I turned off the engine of my car the transmitter and ipod would be also off???? Is there still power coming into the cigarette lighter when the car is off>????? i have a mercedes c class. The cigarette lighter is still working and the transmitter is still working. Are you saying that by leaving them still plugged in even though the car was idle and not running it still destroyed the hard drive???? Also could this happen if a person leaves it docked in a radio cd player but is not listening to it, is it still charging and could this have burned out the hard drive. (i always left it docked) until i bought the transmitter for the car.

Your thoughts would be much appreciated as obviously I do not want to make the same mistake again.

kind regards

As long as the iPod is powered off, it is okay to leave it in the car coolest place. I wouldn't know, if connecting to your car audio system, will power off the iPod, even if the engine is switched off. My main concern, is when you switch on the engine, with the iPod connected, to the Audio, a surge in Audio power circuitry might danmage the iPod. (Of course, Merz will say this is not possible) and Apple does have voltage protector to prevent over charging, but I'm refering to power surges, while starting the engine.

I would suggest, to disconnect the iPod before starting the engine.

Do go to Merz forum sites and see if there is a lot of iPod burned issues.

Many thanks for all your help. Yes I will look up the Mercedes Forum sites but I think that what your saying is correct. Something burned the hard drive and its not a coincidence that it was left plugged in in my car and then refused to work. I have contacted Apple but it is too expensive to have it repaired, cheaper to buy a new one.

Many thanks for all your help. Greatly appreciated.

Unfotunately, there is little evidence to prove my conclusion, and it is not all the time, some ipod classic failed after more than 6 months in the Merz Audio, so when they test your audio, the power trends doesn't surge much. It is like a swiss cheese, many holes, but maybe one in every thousand chesse, the holes will aligned and cause the failure.

Besides Merz, try and google BMW and VW too, they also got the same issuess, but it is always not their problem, just like when iTunes failed in Windows, neither company will admit it is their bug.

Have a nice day!🙂
