Am trying to change the message list font in Mountain Lion. It did not work in Lion and still does not work in Mountain Lion:
Mail->Preferences-->Fonts and Colors-->Message List Font. No matter what I change it to, there is no change in the list. However, changing the message font works. Is there a fix for this? Thanks.

I agree it needs to be fixed.
I bought a new 17" Macbook Pro couple months ago so I could run Lion and iCloud. I could not change font size, it is hard to read.
I upgraded to Mountain Lion hoping they fixed it, they did not.
I own iPhone 4S, Ipad 2 64gig, latest Apple TV and MBP 17". I have been encouraged to check out other devices because they are customizable. All I want to do is use my devices but if I can't read them....
Just disappointed.
This definitely seems like a bug. And not a small one, as it pertains to a basic accessibility issue for Mac Mail and is a predominant (but broken) preference setting on the standard preferences. I need to set up a bigger font for the mail list, and it just doesn't work :-(
It's actually intentional functionality, not a bug. If you click the little question mark button on the bottom right corner of that preferences panel, you'll see this:
Message list font | Select the font and font size to use for viewing the list of messages (in classic layout only). |
Switch to classic viewing mode and you'll see your preferred font.
I'm not sure why Apple limits it to classic mode, but at least now you know why it wasn't changed in Mountain Lion. 🙂
I still believe it is a bug. Apple may have written code to eliminate an option to increase the font intentionally, functionality should be the goal.
Problem with Classic is Apple killed use of letterbox and widemail in Lion and Mountain Lion. If they were available option in classic I would use it.
Lack of options... simple ones at that.

Go to system prefs > general. change sidebar icon size, and the font size will also change.
I did that and it did change the sidebar but not the message list font
Talked with apple tech and he told me you could change, so I said try it. He did and said you are correct it doesn't change.
Still consider it a bug and still disappointed.
Would have to agree that it's a bug -- or bad UI, simply. Perhaps they want to be sure the multi-line messages look clean, so they won't let you frak it up via font changes. Agree that it wouldn't be so bad if letterbox or widemail were still supported.
Or we had a viable alternate to Mail. Every time one starts up, someone buys it and kills it and makes it proprietary (like Sparrow).
Well, I always use classic mode, and I can't cahnge this either.
Ah, I see. I want to change the MAILBOX list font. Used to be able to in 10.4. Cam't remember the others, but I've got a Cube running 10.4 and it's a cinch.
