Administrator user changes to standard and I can't log in as root to fix it

My admin account has changed to standard. So there are no admins on my Mac OS X 10.5.8.

I got to step 5 from this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1278, but there is no "other" option so I cannot log in as root. I have tried enabling the root account following this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1528, but that also requires admin login.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Let's see if we can fool it into making an admin account...

Starts up like the first time you buy a new Mac, but after filling in all that info again, you should have access to the computer and the other Users & files will still be there... give the new User a different name than an existing one.

Hello BDAqua,

I tried this and the new user account that was created was a Standard user and not an Admin. Did I miss something?

During the setup process I didn't fill out the registration portion, but I did creat a user account with a different name than all the other accounts. So I don't know what went wrong.

Thanks for your help.

Hello BDAqua,

Trying your first link

http://macosx.com/forums/howto-faqs/299801-howto-fix-user-lost-administrator-pri vileges.html

I set the root password. Then logged in with my account. Clicked the lock button and enter root name and password for the admin. This enabled me to check the box "allow user to administer this computer". When I do this I get the following:

"For this change to take effect, you must log out then log in again"

So I do it, but when I log back in, the account is still Standard and not an Admin.

I also tried to log in as "Other", then used root username and password, but it shows the root account as Standard and not Admin. So trying to make othe accounts as Admin results in the same thing as above.

Also, I tried to create a new admin account while logged in as root, but that still ends up being Standard.

Trying your Second link

http://www.hackmac.org/tutorials/from-standard-to-administrator/

entering:

dscl . -append /Groups/admin GroupMembership username

results in: you must load . . . first?

launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.DirectoryServicesLocal.plist

This doesn't work so I read somewhere to run this command without "Local" at the end:

launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.DirectoryServices.plist

then I enter:

dscl . -append /Groups/admin GroupMembership username

result in:

dscl_cmd ds error -14009 edsunkownnodename

Thanks for all your help in advance. I am running out of options 😟

Hello BDAqua,

Thank you sooooo much.

This solution from this link pretty much solved it for me.

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1448801?start=0&tstart=0

When I entered:

$ dseditgroup -o create -i 80 admin

It didn't get an error like in the instructions. So I knew the admin group was created successfully. So I retried the following:

$ dscl . append /groups/admin GroupMembership myuser

with "myuser" being the short name for the account I wanted to make an admin,but I didn't get this following error like I did before

=> <dscl_cmd> DS Error: -14009 (eDSUnknownNodeName)

So I figured it must have worked. I rebooted and yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

Thank you so much 🙂
