Q: Mountain Lion keeps forgetting display arrangement

Hello,

I have a brand new 12-core Mac Pro using two ViewSonic VA2026W displays. Every time I shut down and start up my Mac after installing OSX 10.8, my display arrangement is reversed from how I had it set before shutting down. This happened once with the original install of 10.7, so I switched the cables around thinking I had put them in the wrong order, and it never happened again. It doesn't seem like I should have to switch the cables again just because it's a new OS. This problem never occurred on my older 6-core Mac Pro on 10.6.8 using the same exact displays.

I understand that I can go into the system preferences and change the arrangement back, but that becomes pretty annoying having to then drag windows back where they are supposed to be and resetting wallpaper. I saw something about how the OS might not be able to tell the difference between the two displays, but why would this just become a problem with 10.8? And please don't say I should purchase Apple displays, they are absurdly high-priced.

Thanks for any advice you can provide!

Sam

Experiencing this too with a 2012 Mac Mini, and just gave Apple feedback.

(My screen arrangements are reset on restart. Using two Dell 27". One via miniDP/TB (daisy-chained through a Drobo 5D) and one via HDMI. Both screens work fine, but the arrangement is reset.)

This too is happening to me, though only when I originally boot into another User account  ( I keep one for work and one for personal )  my work one works regardless, my personal one only works properly when I log into it from boot.  Gets very tiring.   Trying to look for a script that will switch it for me.

Basically, in order for one to not have or have very little issues when upgrading to a new OS, is to not just update.  One needs to wipe the drive completely, install the OS from scratch, and reinstall all software they had.  Mac OS X updates have been a constant nightmare for me the last few years.  ALWAYS something that gets messed up.  And the only way for my system to run fine like it was prior to the update, is to reformat and reinstall.  Just like with the iPhone.  That's Apple's solution to things they can't answer, reformat and reinstall.  A pain in the arse.  Such is the way of Apple since the passing of Jobs.

I have a late 2013 trashcan MacPro. I use a 30" Cinema Display and 27" connected through HDMI. I had no issues running that setup on Mavericks for the past 2 years. I upgraded today and I'm now having this issue. this is really a bummer!

Same thing happening here. 3 displays.. I just updated to 10.11.3 El Capitan and I've never had this issue until now. On late 2013 Mac Pro 8 core.

    Dear All,

I am the creator of a video server/media manipulation tool called Isadora.  I came up with a procedure that allowed one user of my to get a reliable screen order – at least on a "trash can" Mac Pro. Other users have reported success using this process as well.

    1. Go to ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/
    2. Delete the file com.apple.windowserver.XXXXXXXX... (the XXXXXX part is quite long and will be different on every machine.) This file holds the display order you've defined previously in the Displays panel of the System Preferences. (Note that any previously saved setups will be lost because of this.)
    3. Reboot
    4. From this point forward – never reorder your monitors in the Displays panel of the System Preferences. Instead, you need to physically reorder your cables so that the right image shows up on the right projector/display.
    5. Label everything and write down how they are plugged in to the computer, because the cable order is obviously critical now; you can just reorder it in software.

As the saying goes, your mileage may vary. But this process worked for one user who was going nuts with this issue.

    Best Wishes,

    Mark
