i have a macbook pro. when i rent a movie on itunes i can watch it on my macbook., but, when i use an adapter to an rgb connection to my hdtv , the image goes blank. The movie seems to be playing but no image or sound on the mac or the tv.

It's the copy protection. You can't watch iTunes movies over the RGB component cables/adapters. You have to use HDMI or DVI. If you have an HDMI or DVI port on your TV, use that instead.
