iMac sound card stopped working in Mountain Lion

iMac 24-inch, Early 2008

Processor 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Software OS X 10.8 (12A269)

Built-in Output:

Manufacturer: Apple Inc.

Output Channels: 2

Current SampleRate: 44100

Transport: Built-in

Getting no audio output. I have jiggered the sound settings in System Prefs. No volume control is available. No sound will play through the speakers.

I see the interface in System Prefs and System Profiler.
