What happens if I accidentally insert the batteries backwards in my trackpad?

Question

I accidentally inserted batteries backwards. And now I cannot5 get the trackpad to turn on. What can I do? (Yes, I know the batteries are good.)

MacBook Pro (13-inch Late 2011), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

It's shouldn't have hurt anything because the + side is recessed and wouldn't have made connection.

Hold the power switch for 5 seconds to turn off, then tape the power switch once to turn back on.
