'Filter' failed error when printing from EPSON

I have an Epson TX420W all-in-one printer, and recently upgraded to OSX Mountain Lion, after reading that I wouldn't have any issues printing after the upgrade. Before the upgrade, I had all Epson drivers up to date (through Software update).

Now when I try to print, after 'Looking up printer', this is what I see:

User uploaded file

I can't check the supplies level either. 😟

I checked the EPSON support & drivers page, but couldn't find an updated driver for my printer (only up to 10.7.x)

Does anyone had the same experience or a workaround to this until an driver update comes out?

Thanks in advance!

Hi! I had the same problem. I solved the Epson "filter failed" problem by deleting the printer from the System Preferences printers list and re-installing the last version of the Epson printer driver for my Mac OS version.

Problem solved!

Have a great day!

Not sure what you are trying or what system you have.

I have an Macbook pro 2013 with OSx 10.9 Mavericks.

I downloaded a ghostscript 9.10 package (Mac 'installer') from

http://pages.uoregon.edu/koch/Ghostscript-9.10.pkg

the file called Ghostscript-9.10.pkg downloads in your download folder.

doubleclick that file and an installer starts.

next next next and done.

(Ghostscript.com has the linux sources to compile a Mac specific installer but I don't know how to do that and professor Robert Koch seemed to have done that nicely.)

iMac 13.2 Intel running Maverics 10.9.1. Same problem. Tried the Ghostscript install, which seemed to complete successfully, but the problem persists. This problem seems to have come about as a result of automatic updating of the OS. I certainly hope that Apple will pay attention and fix it, because I have already tried all the fixes that I could find posted on 'discussions.'

For what it’s worth, I had this problem just now and came across this discussion. I then stumbled across a solution in my case — I am using my Epson Stylus Office BX535WD via WiFi, and have two parallel WLANs connected to each other. I realized that I was not in the same WLAN as the Epson printer — my MacBook could see it and would send a print job, but it would cause the error noted. I then switched to the same WLAN as the printer, and then it worked fine. Go figure.

Okay, regarding this problem:

I'm trying to print to an Advent AW10 printer from an Imac running Yosemite 10.10.1 and it's been driving me nuts for the last two months...

I got on to Advent yesterday and recieved this instruction from their support team this morning and it worked and I'm now printing away merrily:

Please follow below steps:

In Spotlight search window type Terminal and then press Enter.

This should bring up the terminal window/program.

In the Terminal type:

sudo sh -c 'echo "Sandboxing Relaxed" >> /etc/cups/cups-files.conf' then press Enter.

It will ask for your password. Please enter system password.(You will not see password entering)

After that type following:

sudo launchctl stop org.cups.cupsd then press Enter.

Try Printing.

I don't think this is specific to Advent and is rather simply an 'opening up' of something blocking the 'printer channels' (layman's terms obviously)

Hope this helps people out!

I already had a name in my Sharing panel and all the rest. But I saw one message above about printing outside the printable area. Adjusted my content to be within the prinatable area and all was fine.

It can be a bit hazardous diving into your system's settings, substituting drivers, monkeying around with Terminal… good idea to try simple stuff first.

Adjusting print area worked first time.

I recently upgraded to Yosemite and today noticed I could not print on an old HP 530C inkjet, getting the filter failed message. Going into Printers & Scanners System Preferences and re-choosing a Gutenprint driver I had installed for my last system upgrade solved the problem. Apparently the transition to Yosemite did not preserve the choice I had previously made of that software for my printer.
