Q: 'Filter' failed error when printing from EPSON

I have an Epson TX420W all-in-one printer, and recently upgraded to OSX Mountain Lion, after reading that I wouldn't have any issues printing after the upgrade. Before the upgrade, I had all Epson drivers up to date (through Software update).

Now when I try to print, after 'Looking up printer', this is what I see:

Screen Shot 2012-07-30 at 4.12.37 PM.png

I can't check the supplies level either.

I checked the EPSON support & drivers page, but couldn't find an updated driver for my printer (only up to 10.7.x)

Does anyone had the same experience or a workaround to this until an driver update comes out?

Thanks in advance!

The problem is really strange.  I have two Epson Pro printer with USB conncection on my Mac Pro, a Sylus Pro 3380 and the 7900.  Everything prints fine with the 3880 but I got the "Filter failed" error with the 7900. It appears after the update to OSX-10.9.

I have tried resetting, new driver, change the name in Sharing, and I still get the "Filter failed" error.  This really bad, since I have many large prints to produce for clients.

I realy do not know what to do now.  Any idea ?

    Thanks,

    Rejean

    Hi Rejean

As you will know from my earlier post I'm also experiencing this problem but on a much cheaper printer.  I've now had extensive talks with Epson and they have been very supportive but have been unable to solve the problem.  So I am now using an old Macbook Pro running OS X 10.6.8 (it's an old single core system so can't (luckily) be upgraded) as a print server.  It can run the printer fine and then it can be Shared over the network with my other studio machines.  It's not ideal but it works.  My printer is a multifunction (Artisan 725) and just to note this doesn't work for the Scanner (which won't share) - so I can only use this function on the 10.6.8 system.

    Hope this is helpful.

    Paul

Hey! Had same issue with my MacBook Air 2013 and EpsonL355. Uninstall and reinstall worked just fine.

    Hope it helps.

On Mavericks - Uninstalled and reinstalled several times before finally getting my Epson 2200 to not get the "stopped" message and print nicely.

Keep adding and deleting until it works.

I did this by selecting from printer list in "bonjour", not "neighboring" printers. Took about 5 times for me.

BTW- It was working fine until a recent automatic Apple software installed an Epson driver update for this printer.

I had the 'Filter Failure' problem too (on my Epson PX730WD).

    Tried everything but nothing helped.

then I noted that I could print from Word but not from Adobe Reader (pdf).

My problem was that Ghostscript (postscript / pdf interpreter software) apparently was broken.

    http://www.ghostscript.com/download/

does not provide installers for Mac OSx (just sources)

    With google, I found

    http://pages.uoregon.edu/koch/

    and

    http://www.bestfreewaredownload.com/download/t-free-ghostscript-for-mac-os-x-fre eware-hlidifhu.html

that provided packages for Mac OSx (Mavericks in my case).

    Download, Install

    Problem solved!

Not sure what you are trying or what system you have.

I have an Macbook pro 2013 with OSx 10.9 Mavericks.

I downloaded a ghostscript 9.10 package (Mac 'installer') from

    http://pages.uoregon.edu/koch/Ghostscript-9.10.pkg

the file called Ghostscript-9.10.pkg downloads in your download folder.

doubleclick that file and an installer starts.

    next next next and done.

(Ghostscript.com has the linux sources to compile a Mac specific installer but I don't know how to do that and professor Robert Koch seemed to have done that nicely.)

iMac 13.2 Intel running Maverics 10.9.1.  Same problem.  Tried the Ghostscript install, which seemed to complete successfully, but the problem persists.  This problem seems to have come about as a result of automatic updating of the OS.  I certainly hope that Apple will pay attention and fix it, because I have already tried all the fixes that I could find posted on 'discussions.'

This seems to be what failed:

that seems like a very different problem than I had.

I'd say - if you have timemachine and not too many changes afther this failed update- go back to before.

the rest doesn't really make sense to me.

only the 'epson' thing would indicate that it is related to the printer.

The solution (for me, at least) was simple: I had set Paper Handling to Even Only for a previous print job and it had remained. I couldn't print a 1-page report because it was page 1, an odd number. I reset Paper Handling to All and everything's great.

I too had this "Filter failed" error with my Epson R1900 printer........What resolved the issue for me was going into System Preferences >> Printers & Scanners >> and deleting the printer; after deleting the printer, I clicked the "+" symbol at the bottom of the pane and added the printer back and all has been well since.

I experienced this problem on 3 of 6 Epson 3800's. Turns out those three with the error had lost their IP address assignments, so the computers in a lab couldn't actually communicate with the printers. After setting the IP info again (and for good measure deleting the printer driver, and installing the latest drivers from Epson), all is well.

Same here, all i had to do was to set paper size to A4, which had changed for some reason.

Same problem here. Probably due to errors in the document (pdf's generated by some billing system of one of my vendors). I solve this by printing the document first to a new pdf file and then to the printer. Works always.
