Jul 30, 2012 2:30 PM in response to harddeagby LaPastenague,The disk has to be formatted in a way the Extreme can read.. that is fat32 or HFS+.. if you have windows formatted disk, NTFS you will not be able to use it without formatting.
It is possible to use the disk by simply sharing it with the network.. plugged into the original computer and shared the Mac can access it. Similarly on a Mac if the disk is able to be recognised then it can be shared. There are also tools to allow a Mac to read NTFS.. I would not recommend write as the speed is slow. Similarly there are tools for PC to read HFS+.. again write tools are more expensive and open to possible issues.. it is better to keep both using their native systems.. External drives are cheap enough again, just buy a new one and use it direct.. please also note .. a usb disk connected to AEBS or Time Capsule will have transfer speeds less than half of the same disk plugged directly into the computer.. and that is none too fast.
You also may need a powered hub.. even though the disk is powered from its own supply.. at least for the TC many people have issues that are solved with a powered hub.
