Q: Cannot sync notes with GMail IMAP

I just upgraded to ML (need to update my sig). Prior to the upgrade, I was syncing notes through my GMail IMAP account and viewing the notes in Mail.app. After upgrading, the notes were not selected by default in the new Notes.app. I selected GMail notes and they appeared within 30 seconds. However, I mistakenly clicked the checkbox again, removing my GMail notes from the iMac. Now, every time I try to select notes under my GMail account in Preferences, Mail, Contacts & Calendars, I get an error stating that "Mail couldn't discover the account settings for the Mail server 'gmail.com'" The mail account works perfectly and I can send and receive emails without any problems. I can no longer access my notes via the notes app.

I tried deleting the account and recreating it without success. Oddly enough, the special "GMail" banner in new account setup resulted in the same error message as above, but it gave me the option to continue and enter the server settings manually. When I try to select notes, the error just gives me an OK button with no opportunity to fix the supposed error.

In summarry,

1) Mail.app is setup correctly and works perfectly

2) Trying to sync notes results in the app claiming that Mail.app isn't setup perfectly and gives me no option to remedy the situation. Is there any way to fix it?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.4), 2.93 Intel i7

I would like an answer too, this just started happening to me today, when I unclicked then clicked the notes box in the account settings for gmail in within the system preferences pane.  I have been having this problem with the Mail program as well, it used to sync my Gmail IMAP but now it doesn't.

    I have the same issue.

I have 3 gmail imap accounts, wihout problems regarding emails.

One is working well with notes, and for the 2 others, it's impossible to check the box notes in system pref.

Any idea would be very useful, as the 2 accounts are working OK on my iphone in notes, so I don't understand why it's not the same on my mac...

    Thanks,

Is Gmail set up for IMAP?

The unfortunate fact is that Gmail's IMAP implementation is totally nonstandard.  There are all sorts of issues with it, including the way it handles folders.

I would STRONGLY suggest using iCloud for notes.  It's free if you use < 5 GB of space.  You will have issues with Gmail and Notes, and unless Gmail fixes their IMAP implementation, there's little that can be done from the OS X side.

I don't think the problem is on Google's side, it has been working ok until I accidentaly unclicked the option to synchronize Notes with my Google account, whe I tried to enable the option it gave me the error described in the first message and it never worked again.

Yes it is set up for Imap.

Notes have been working without trouble until yesterday, when I unchecked the box in system prefs...

I cannot use Icloud, because I need a gmail account that I share with somebody, who is using another Icloud account, as me.

We need to share gmail for emails, and notes. the only working option, is to use notes on our iphones with an account set up with gmail Imap. Notes are working fine on the iphone on the gmail account, so I don't understand why it does not on our macs...

Have you tried to sync notes with iCloud? I'm asking because I have exactly the same problem as you (was working ok with gmail until I unclicked the note sync option).

I've tried to sync with iCloud and I couldn't sync Notes either, it returns an error. Looking at /var/log/syslog, I found this when iCloud gives me an error:

Could not find or create an iCloud accout

Obviously I have an iCloud account correctly created, because the other items (like Safari, Contacts, etc) synchronize correctly

Hi, I am having the same problem.

This is not a problem specific to ML. My iMac is running Snow Leopard, (10.6.8), iTunes 11.4 and i can no longer sync notes or calendar to iPad mini running 8.1.3. My email is IMAP4 and notes is switched on.  I can select Notes and Calendars under iPad 'info' when I sync but they don't sync and when I look at it again, they are unchecked.

I DO NOT want an iCloud account as I don't trust the security, (I back up to iMac and then frequent back ups with Time Machine) but I can find no information on how I can sync the notes using any other method.

Massive backward step from Apple for something that was so simple and always worked. I am rapidly going off Apple products and have used them for over 20 years. Apple, as a company is trying to get too much control over personal data and how an individual can save it.

Any advice on this issue greatfully received, meanwhile I will continue to trawl forums and Google.

    Thanks
